A reader in Facebook just asked over the weekend what Ebates was, and thought I would repost:
Above is a copy of our account at Ebates back when we first started it. Want to make money by getting cash back on your purchases? How about $5 for signing up, and telling your friends about it? So what is Ebates?
Ebates is a Portal.
A portal is a path from one spot to another. Its an easy way to find something in a centralized location.
Ebates is a store list directory that gets deals, coupon codes, or cash back incentives from stores, both online and walk-in-to type retailers. You name it they probably have a deal for it.
First sign up, if you haven’t already, by logging into Ebates here
Second chose the store you would like to shop at.
Ebates then sends you to that particular store website.
From then on you are shopping through that store as if you typed their name in to a search bar yourself, EXCEPT…
Now you will get cash back, or percentage off, or what ever the deal was that you saw when you first clicked to enter that site. Ta-da..that simple. Just a portal to get deals.
Now “A Thrifty Mom” browses Ebates to find large percentages, or large cash back incentives and will post them here at our site. Think of it as weeding out the so-so deals.
Oh did we mention just for signing up Ebates puts $5 bucks into your account there. So as you shop at the stores you pick from, you build up a bank of cash that Ebates will send to you as a “BIG FAT CHECK”. You can set up your account to get that check as an actual paper check, or sent to your Paypal account( that’s how we have it set), or you can donate it to charity, or have it sent to a friend in need. It is sent by the way you set it up as on an automatic cycle. Now it does take about a day or so for some stores to report back to Ebates. So don’t be alarmed if you buy something, log back into Ebates and there is no increase in your bank stash. Check it out here

Ebates is one of the best cash back sites. Irrespective of occasion, it keeps on offering exciting deals throughout the year. If you have not yet signed up for Ebates, do it right now! Grab the offers! You will also get some exciting deals on FatWallet, ShopAtHome, AAfter Search. Moreover, you will get $2.5 to $5 as sign up bonus as well as huge cash back.
Ebates is awesome around christmas time, I do most of my shopping online. Keep in mind though, that when you use some promo codes it makes you ineligible for ebates. Not sure what designates eligible from not eligible but I have gotten zinged a couple times for it.
dsusan, Ebates doesn’t pay you just for signing up, you have to buy something (not from them, they don’t sell anything) and once you do, you get cash back, because the store you buy from pays Ebates a commission for sending you to them, and then Ebates splits that money with you. So once you do that, then they’ll add the $5 bonus on top. They pay you for real, I’ve been using them for years and just got my check for the Christmas season cash back — over $80. Once you try them, you’ll wonder why everyone doesn’t.
Is there a minimum amount that you must have in your account in order to request a cash back check? Can I just sign up, have $5 credited to my account and then request the $5 check???
I only use Ebates and got a $10 check in November and expecting another soon. I had to order flowers for my mother in law for her birthday and through Proflowers will get back 16%!! That will be a nice bonus for something I was already going to buy!
I have used Cashbaq as well but today when I checked my account, it said that Cashbaq was closed (hit by recession). Do you know anything about it?
This is my first year using ebates so when I checked my mail today I was surprised to find a check for $10.34. I knew I had a credit, but didn’t actually know how to redeem it. So I guess they send out checks yearly. Good day at the mailbox today!!!!
