Bag of Rice Project #200 -A visit to the Sunday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Sunday family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tom & Niki Berkenpas this is the 200th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Jackson family to us and they were very interesting to meet. Mrs Sunday is a widow, she and her 3 kids and 2 grandchildren live in a one bedroom mudhouse that has no electricity or plumbing. This village also has a problem with water and to get water they have to fetch from their local stream or collect rain water.

The Sundays cook in a semi open kitchen. They use fire wood to cook because it is the cheapest they can afford. Mrs Sunday is a farmer and she stays with one of her childen whom we did not meet at home. This her daughter has 2 kids whom we met with their Grandmother Mrs Sunday. Mrs Sundays daughter sells vegetables in the market along with any crops that her mother harvest from their farm. It has not been easy for this family as this year’s harvest has been poor.

We were happy to meet this family. Mrs Sunday was happy to meet us and was even happier with her bag of Rice. They appreciated this bag of Rice because it has gone up in price due to inflation and families here can no longer afford it. They were thankful to those who donated and I know that it will be very beneficial to this family.
