Bag of Rice Project #488 -A visit to the Tommy family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Tommy family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 488th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This beautiful family was recommended to us by a friend. We met the family in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. When we drove in we met their grandmother outside. The family is blessed with 4 kids. The family lives in a one-room apartment and the house is built with mud, though they are constructing some parts of the house with blocks. The family were happy when we told them what we have for them, they asked which political party we are affiliated with and we told them someone donated it to them, they didn’t believe such still happens in Nigeria.

The family cooks with firewood because that’s the cheapest they can afford. They are unable to get cooking gas because of the price and also considering how the economy is they stick to firewood.  Mr Tommy sells beef at the local market and he does this to fend for the family, the wife is unemployed and she said she has an interest in learning hairdressing but the money to start up is the problem.

The family were happy and prayed God will bless the donor for blessing them in this trying time. They offered us their local alcoholic drink to show their appreciation but we politely declined. They waved at us as we left.
