Bag of Rice Project #82 -A visit to the Effiong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Effiong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Melanie Reeves this is the 82nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

On our way to the Okon family, we passed by a beautiful looking mud house and I asked around and Mr Okon told me it was an old widow that stayed there with her daughter. After we finished delivery with the Okons we headed there and we met with Mrs Effiong and her daughter Veronica. They stay in bungalow mud house and she stays there with her daughter and grand daughter.

Mrs Effiong has a long narrow room that is reserved for cooking and she uses kerosene to cook. I had to talk to her with a translator and I found that she is a farmer and her daughter also helps her farm. She has been widowed for a long time and she has struggled to survive with her farming.

Mrs Effiong was shocked when she heard we wanted to give her a bag of Rice. I could see her face change from one of confusion to absolute joy when she asked if the Rice was for her. She immediately dropped to the ground and started praying. Then she told us that her farm has not been productive recently and they have had problems feeding. And she was praying for some kind of help and we showed up out of the blue to show. I felt prompted to visit this family and I am glad that we could help them with what was their immediate problem and became an answer to their prayers.
