Maracas Made From Plastic Eggs, Recycle Those Easter Eggs!

If you have kids and do any sort of Easter egg hunt you probably have an abundance of these little guys around the house right after Easter, am I right?  They seem to multiply! Last year I was so excited because I thought we used the last of ours at a family egg hunt.  I didn’t consider that my kids were also participating and we brought home just as many as we took!  Oh well, you might be glad you have extra because now you can make these!

You will need:

plastic eggs

plastic spoons

washi or duck tape

beans, rice, gravel, something to place in your eggs

These are great because they don’t require a trip to the store.  Use what you have and they will be perfect! You will need 2 spoons for every 1 plastic egg.

Begin by putting some of your filler inside your egg.  I used beans because I had them already and they are super inexpensive.  I didn’t fill them very full, you want the beans to be able to move around.  So i filled one half of an egg about half way.  Feel free to experiment and see if different fillings change the sound of the maraca!

Make sure your egg is shut all the way.  You want to be sure you are using an egg that will close all the way, sometimes these eggs like to come apart on their own, don’t use one of those.

Once you have filled it and shut it, place it between two plastic spoons and wrap a few times in your washi tape.

That is it!  Wasn’t that easy?  I thought this would be great for a preschool group or a church nursery.  As long as you keep an eye to make sure they are not opening them.

Enjoy your new instruments!

replace a worn out trampoline safety pad with pool noodles ~ Easy DIY, #diy, #trampoline, #poolnoodles, #homeimprovement

Here is a quick and easy safety tip that can be done on a budget…. Replace A Worn Out Trampoline Safety Pad With Pool Noodles .  Plus it looks really cool, I love how the bright colors POP and make the trampoli look bright and cheerful.

We have had a trampoline for a few years now and I think we take pretty good care of it.  We take it down for the winter, and try to avoid the kids “abusing” it.  Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing for the weather!  All it took was a few bad wind storms last year and the poor net and safety pad were trash!  I am sure I am not the only one who got pinched by a trampoline spring or two as a kid. It doesn’t feel good!  I was hoping to avoid that with my kids. Since I am thrifty, I didn’t want to spend a lot on a replacement.  These pool noodles were from the dollar store.  I bought 10 but only ended up needing 9.  Can’t beat $9!  Not to mention, I think it looks fun and brightens up the back yard!

You will need:

Pool noodles

box cutter

A tool to remove the springs (we got one with our trampoline that we saved. but I found a replacement here for super inexpensive if you need one!)

Begin by measuring your spring and deciding what length you would like your sections to be.  Then measure and cut your pool noodles into as many sections as it will provide.  You will probably end up with little pieces off the ends, save them, they will work for summertime crafts for the kids!

Once you have them all cut, it is time to put them over the springs. Using your nifty tool, remove one spring at a time, sliding the pool noodle onto the spring before replacing it.

This isn’t hard, just monotonous.  Thankfully I had my husband do it for me and it took him just a few minutes.

There you have it!  A bright, cheerful trampoline makeover that will be fun all summer long!

Chalk Paint Mason Jar Teacher Gift Idea

I showed you all how to make a mason jar really have character with some chalk paint here. Now I want to show you how to turn that jar into a great teacher gift!

The only extra thing you need on top of the chalk painted jar, is some twine or jute and a saying for the front. When I saw this saying a while ago I thought it would be perfect for one teacher in particular that really goes above and beyond.  I love that it says “Teachers who love to teach, teach children to love to learn.”

I cut that out of vinyl and stuck it on the front of the jar.

For all of the fillers, that is totally up to you!  If you use a short, wide mouth jar, you could add some pencils, pens or markers. This tall jar didn’t leave a lot of options, but I didn’t think about that ahead of time. Obviously, there is no set amount to spend, that is up to you .  Some ideas are some cute pens, lip gloss, candy, gift cards, really, whatever you can come up with! If you go the candy route, you can buy that pretty cheap making it great for a small budget! It really is about the thought!

Easy, Thrifty Lego Storage

It started out innocently enough, kids love legos, so a bucket of them seemed like the perfect gift idea.  Then they requested sets for other holidays and birthdays.  Before I knew it we had a small tote full.  So full that rummaging through them was next to impossible and playing with them was a chore instead of a creative, fun time!

I researched different ways to store them, and while I loved some of them, they weren’t practical or thrifty!  I decided on plan b; get some empty plastic shoe boxes and let each color have it’s own box.  So far it has worked great!  All 3 of my kids have spent a couple of hours on the floor creating various masterpieces.  So much better than asking to watch tv or play a video game!

I started with 10 boxes to be safe.  I had one for each color.  As I finished organizing them, I discovered that there weren’t enough of some of the colors to need their own box.  I ended up mixing the blue and purple and the yellow, red and orange.  Apparently we have an over abundance of grey and we may have to divide it in half (thanks to the obsession for the Star Wars sets).

I admit that I enjoyed it at first, I have a thing for organizing and with a family haven’t been able to keep things the way I would’ve in the past.  So this gave me a chance to rekindle that obsession, hobby.  If you don’t enjoy that type of thing, or even if you do, what a great way to spend some time with your kids while you let them help divide the colors into their boxes!  Finish up by labeling your boxes so that they are easy to see which one you need.  I cut labels out of vinyl in a Lego brix font I believe I got from dafont.com.  You could easily do it in different colors of vinyl to match the color in the box, or even in the coordinating color of permanent marker.
