Just my thoughts

Sandy Hook Prayer

I can only speak for myself, but the Sandy Hook tragedy has been on my mind non stop. I have been praying for these families, that they may find the strength to get through this trial and feel the comfort from the prayers of this nation offered up to the Lord in their behalf.

Today I went to church with my family, as we do every Sunday. I was touched when they invited us to read the 3rd verse of the hymn Away In A Manager and find comfort in the words.  I thought I would share it with you as well.

Be near me, Lord Jesus;
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray!
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care,
And fit us for Heaven
To live with Thee there.

What is the first thing that pops into your head when I say the word McDonald’s?  There is going to be a whole range answers, but my answer might surprise you.  It has nothing to do with food, locations, health or even cost!

My very first memories of McDonald’s was my Grandpa taking me to get a cheeseburger after our family went to the local rodeo.  I did not even get a happy meal, just a single cheeseburger wrapped in that famous yellow wrapper.  I sat on my Grandpa’s lap and happily gobbled down my burger enjoying every last bite.  We did not eat out often so it was a real treat, and something I have always remembered.

As I got a little older and attended school,  my local McDonalds would give us a FREE Cheeseburger if we got all A’s and B’s on our report card.  So once again we would load the whole family into the car and head to town with our report cards and enjoy a special lunch.  As a teenager it became a place we would stop in for a quick bite to eat, often late at night after a school dance or some other event.

But 11 years ago when my son Matthew was born missing half his heart (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) McDonald’s became much more than an happy memory or a place to grab a burger.  I was far from home, my tiny son was in a hospital bed fighting for his life everyday.  It was all I could do to just make it from one minute to the next. Ronald McDonald House gave me a place to sleep, food to eat and even shampoo to wash my hair. Because often our trips were so rushed we did not even have time to pack, we just went with the clothes on our back.

Knowing what they gave me, in my time of need I make an effort to pay it forward and donate to our local Ronald McDonald House.  You never know the value of something as simple as a razor till you have lived in a hospital for 3 weeks and shaving your legs again is a big deal. Just doing something normal is a glimmer or hope that life will be ok again.

So when I think of McDonalds … I am overcome with the feeling of being  SAFE and CARED for.  It started with snuggles with my Grandpa, then being encouraged to work hard and achieve good grades, and then arms open wide to help my family in our darkest hour!

That is why the A Thrifty Mom Family will always be a fan of McDonalds!

It’s Matt again 😉

Every four years there is another political person wanting your support. This year it is that year – to vote. Why is it important to vote? Many people even my self have thought what does it matter if “I” do or don’t vote? Living in Idaho as one of the highest supporting republican states, what does it matter if I vote republican or democrat? If I vote republican then my vote is lost in the huge sea of republican votes. If I vote democrat then my vote is drowned out by the overwhelming sea of republicans.

This is played out in many voters minds across the nation. This and many other reasons as to why it might be pointless to vote. Maybe it is because you think why vote for two pointless leaders. Maybe it is that you are going to be out of the country and not able to vote due to not being in your district? This year that is the case for us. We will be gone during this November voting Tuesday. But this year I feel an even greater need to vote. So this year I will have to do more and go out of my way to vote, more then I and my wife have ever done before.

This post is not meant to lean you one way or another. We have turned down many, many opportunities to share our political views, and have turned down paid posts to keep our site neutral. So I will not hint to my political stance, or even my religious views. This is a thrifty living site, not a political site. So why bring this up then you are asking?

Just as trying to live a thrifty life, or just like choosing to be out of debt, voting is sometimes a hard action to take. Budgeting takes weeks and weeks of dedication. But the outcome is such a great satisfaction of accomplishment! The satisfaction of not only being debt free but there is satisfaction in accomplishing a goal. This year it will be a big accomplishment for us to vote. To go through the steps to vote will make this voting season very important.

Not only do we as a nation have a big choice this year. But we also have a chance to help our self’s. No matter your political stance, I would hope that you will go out of your way to make a statement. Not to just claim your political side, but to claim your sense of American accomplishment. Our country was founded on the idea of our country being run by the people. And that our government is “for the people”. So this year help your self feel the sense of patriotic accomplishment and go out of your way to vote!

If these Iraqi women brave bombings, suicides and more to vote,

then we can’t we vote?

It’s Matt – Sarah’s hubby. It has been awhile since I typed out my thoughts. But this has been on my mind:

Remember watching TV when you were young and some one would say a word that shocked you?

Work Out

Now a days we think nothing about it. Remember those work out shows where the ladies would wear tights and a unitard that covered every square inch. At that time we thought how could some one wear something so revealing?

Naked

Naked Mole Rat on commercial

Just this past week the PTC (Parent Television Council) put out a report showing that on television:

  • “use of the bleeped or muted f-word increased from 11 instances in 2005 …
  • ..to 276 instances in 2010 – an increase of 2,409%”
  • In the season of 2011 to 2012 there were 76 times a scene showed full nudity of any kind – front or back.
  • Compared to 2010 there were only 15 times full nudity was shown.
  • An increase of 407%
  • During the 2010 to 2011 season there was only one instance of Full Frontal Nudity.
  • Then in 2011 to 2012 there were 64 scenes of Full Frontal Nudity. That is a 6,400% increase.

These numbers are not of cable shows like Showtime or HBO. This is normal free television like CBS, NBC, ABC! Where have we come in only a year, yet many have not even noticed the increase. Why is that? Are we numb to TV now? Have we seen so much that we enjoy those shows now. Why do the major networks do this? Is it a marketing catch, a forced change? Why do we allow this? There has been report after report that this desensitising leads to more and more of not only this but so much more.
