Mommy Moments

spiderman on the cat standWe had  family and friends over to our house yesterday after we blessed our new baby Madilyn at church.  The parents were in the kitchen talking, the girls where upstairs playing dress up and the boys were in the family room playing Xbox.  But I could not find my 4 year old son Maveric.  I then spotted something in the corner of the room.

There he was on top of the cat stand…..  Fully dressed in his spider-man costume.  Ready to save the day, this boy cracks me up.  I had no idea he even put the suit on, so to find him perched on top the cat stand gave me a good laugh.

July 4th 2014We have had a busy weekend, surrounded with family and friends.   We feel so very blessed to live in this great nation, and are so grateful for those who have fought and continue to fight to give us those freedoms.  The 4th of July was over 100 degrees for part of the day, but that did not stop us from waving our flags, saluting the soldiers, praying with our families, and enjoying a wonderful day.  I hope you all were able to enjoy your weekend as well!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!

let them be little, super heroBeing 4 is awesome cause you can dress like Superman drive your toy Batman car around and bring smiles to every one who sees you. He wanted to wear this to go see Dad at work… at first I said no… then I was like GO FOR IT. He will grow up before I know it #LetThemBeLittle

With my older kids I was always looking forward to them getting to the NEXT STAGE and so proud of them growing up…. that I wonder if I missed them JUST BEING LITTLE.  They grew too fast, sure they are still young, but with my younger kiddos I feel like I have gotten better at slowing down and enjoying them in the moment, and just letting them be little.

This week my 4 year old had class photo day at his preschool…. he wanted to wear his animal shirt and his fireman boots.  This is NOT the outfit I would have picked for him to wear.  But then I decided, WHY NOT is is 4, this is what makes him happy to wear and it will be a great reminder of just HOW MUCH he loves those silly boots. So this little champ wore his boots for the photo :).

My 4 year old son and his 6 year old sister were fighting about WHAT to play.  He wanted to play batman, and she wanted to play princess and dress up.  They did not want to play alone but would not compromise and take turns and play together.  SO of course they come to me crying …. I told them they just needed to play alone.  Once they got bored the would realize it is better to take turns and play together.   They did not like my solution and both went away pouting.

Soon after that I heard them laughing and playing, and I was feeling pretty good about the fact that they must have listened and were now taking turns.   Some time goes by, they both run threw the kitchen and I said, “I am so proud of you for taking turns and playing nice!”  I then asked the kids who got the first turn… and WHY is my son wearing lip stick?

My 4 year old  son tells me, “We are playing Batman… I am Joker”

My 6 Year old then tell me, “We are playing princess, he would not wear a dress so I told him he was Joker (but really he is a princess) that way he would let me put makeup on him.”

Clever little girl got her way I guess… and brother was happy as can be with a bright red JOKER mouth lol.

Super hero kids, saving the world #MommyMoments

The older I get the more I realize that it is the little things in life that bring me TRUE JOY.  It is the simple things like the laughter of my children, sweet notes left on my pillow from a 6 year old learning to use sentences in kindergarten.  Hearing my 4 year old pray for his friends and  also pray that he can still be a big boy tomorrow and be a super hero, or a fireman, or a garbage truck driver…. because in his eyes they are ALL amazing. .  It is seeing my kids be kind to others, or learning to make better choices when they have made a bad choice and seen the consequence.

These simple moments help make the ones where they are fighting or crying ….. all worth it.  SHOCKER I don’t have perfect children either, being a Mom is HARD but it sure is amazing too :).

Mom and Me Journal

Mom and Me Journal~ Staying Connected With Our Kids

A couple of years ago, my then eight year old daughter left a “love note” on my pillow.  I still have it.  I loved that she would think to do something so sweet.  It dawned on me that I could start a journal with her.  Just her.  No one else would ever get to see it, or hear its contents.  For me, I have always kept a journal, and I find it much easier to share things that I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying out loud.  The very next day I bought a notebook just for us.

Let me tell you, it has worked wonders!  I have gotten to hear some of her fears, crushes, embarrassing moments and just some sappy love notes. Some of the entries are deep and emotional, while others are funny and make me laugh.  I love that I can encourage her, express my feelings for her, share thoughts on life with her.  We don’t write in it daily, but it makes it all the more special when one of us finds this treasure under our pillow at night time.

My daughter is a talker, so I was surprised how much she actually wasn’t sharing because she was too embarrassed to express some things out loud.  Which got me thinking… Her brother is a very introverted child.  Doesn’t like to share much at all.  He talks to us, but when anything “deep” comes up he gets uncomfortable and tends to clam up. How much was I missing from him that he was too afraid to express?  At the time I started journaling with my daughter, he was too young to write or read., but as soon as he was in 2nd grade, I started one with him as well.  Same stipulations; for our eyes only.  The difference in their journals is pretty funny.  Pages are written between the girls, while we have barely passed 2 pages in my son’s.  It hasn’t worked yet for him, but I keep it going hoping that the simple “I love you Mom” notes he leaves me will soon give way to longer entries.  Maybe even get some real depth in them.  However, whether they do or not, he knows that the book is there, that he can open it at any time a send me a note.  He knows that it is a non judgmental way to express his feelings.

The point of the journal is to connect with our kids.  Sometimes I don’t get it back for a month or longer, but I can still sneak into their room and borrow it to write them another note.  That way they get a note.  I plan on keeping them all in a safe place as we fill them up.  I look forward to seeing the penmanship change, the spelling improve and the entries grow in length.  But more than that, I look forward to them reading them as an adult and feeling how much I love them.

This experience has taught me so much about being a Mommy.  I really feel it has strengthened my bond with my kids.  Just a simple way to take a minute from our super busy lives and share a memory or a thought with my kids.

You should find an inexpensive notebook and give it a try.  It doesn’t have to be a fancy journal, my son and I share a composition book (I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t too girly) and it works well.   Even if you aren’t a fan of keeping a journal, this will change your mind!  It is such a  simple way to share our love with someone we care about.
