Mom and Me Journal~ Staying Connected With Our Kids

A couple of years ago, my then eight year old daughter left a “love note” on my pillow.  I still have it.  I loved that she would think to do something so sweet.  It dawned on me that I could start a journal with her.  Just her.  No one else would ever get to see it, or hear its contents.  For me, I have always kept a journal, and I find it much easier to share things that I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying out loud.  The very next day I bought a notebook just for us.

Let me tell you, it has worked wonders!  I have gotten to hear some of her fears, crushes, embarrassing moments and just some sappy love notes. Some of the entries are deep and emotional, while others are funny and make me laugh.  I love that I can encourage her, express my feelings for her, share thoughts on life with her.  We don’t write in it daily, but it makes it all the more special when one of us finds this treasure under our pillow at night time.

My daughter is a talker, so I was surprised how much she actually wasn’t sharing because she was too embarrassed to express some things out loud.  Which got me thinking… Her brother is a very introverted child.  Doesn’t like to share much at all.  He talks to us, but when anything “deep” comes up he gets uncomfortable and tends to clam up. How much was I missing from him that he was too afraid to express?  At the time I started journaling with my daughter, he was too young to write or read., but as soon as he was in 2nd grade, I started one with him as well.  Same stipulations; for our eyes only.  The difference in their journals is pretty funny.  Pages are written between the girls, while we have barely passed 2 pages in my son’s.  It hasn’t worked yet for him, but I keep it going hoping that the simple “I love you Mom” notes he leaves me will soon give way to longer entries.  Maybe even get some real depth in them.  However, whether they do or not, he knows that the book is there, that he can open it at any time a send me a note.  He knows that it is a non judgmental way to express his feelings.

The point of the journal is to connect with our kids.  Sometimes I don’t get it back for a month or longer, but I can still sneak into their room and borrow it to write them another note.  That way they get a note.  I plan on keeping them all in a safe place as we fill them up.  I look forward to seeing the penmanship change, the spelling improve and the entries grow in length.  But more than that, I look forward to them reading them as an adult and feeling how much I love them.

This experience has taught me so much about being a Mommy.  I really feel it has strengthened my bond with my kids.  Just a simple way to take a minute from our super busy lives and share a memory or a thought with my kids.

You should find an inexpensive notebook and give it a try.  It doesn’t have to be a fancy journal, my son and I share a composition book (I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t too girly) and it works well.   Even if you aren’t a fan of keeping a journal, this will change your mind!  It is such a  simple way to share our love with someone we care about.

fireman boots and a at home haircut

It was haircut day at our house this week… and my 3 year old does NOT like to have his hair cut. To make matters worse I could not find our cape that keep the hair off the kids while I cut it. So he got to wear a trash bag instead… I know classy lol.  He as upset and being naughty.  I told him he needed to be brave, and sit up in the chair like a big boy.

He looked at me and said in a very serious tone, ” I better get my fireman boots on, they make me brave.”  He sat there, not happy about the whole thing… but he was in fact BRAVE, thanks to those rubber boots.

Sure do love this silly boy.

snow day cookies

Our family loves the snow, but long winter days inside often lead to cranky kids that are fighting.  This week my Mother-in-law came and saved the day when she bought over all the supplies to make SNOWMAN COOKIES on a very snowy day. She found the idea of Betty Crocker’s site.

She used sugar cookies for the head

White frosting for the face.

M&M’s for the eyes

Candy orange slices for the nose

Twizzler pull and peels for the ear muffs and smiles

Gummy life savers for the ear muffs.

snow day cookies

Just so you know, NO family is perfect…. and a few of the cookies might of hit the floor LOL.  The kids were happy to eat the cookies that jumped over board.

Tea party with freinds, practical gift ideas for little girls

Knowing what to get my kids for Christmas is always a hard choice.  I do not want to get them “Stuff” that will just sit on a shelf and create clutter in our house.  My girls LOVE to have tea parties with their friends, BUT it never fails one of the little ceramic cups and plates fall off the table and break, and their hearts are broken.

I was looking at ONCE AGAIN buying them the little toy ceramic set, but feeling frustrated knowing they would just be broken like the others.  That is when I had an idea…. what if I bought them a REAL SET, something that would not break.  So over the last 5 months my husband and I have been on a little treasure hunt. Picking up a piece here or there, yard sales and 2nd hand stores.  We even had a few date nights where that is all we did, go to every 2nd hand store in the valley looking for trays, butter trays, salt and pepper shakers, bowls, super bowls, gravy pot, tea pots and odds and ends. It was fun, we really enjoyed it. Most the pieces were under a $1 each!

Some of the pieces are real silver, while others are just stainless steel…. it is a mix matched set but all fun, and all very fancy for little girls.  When the girls opened it they were SO excited, which made me happy too. We have had two successful tea party’s with no broken dishes so I think we are off to a good start this year.  Plus it will be fun to add to their collection over the years.

Little brother crashed the tea party yesterday, when he found a “straw” on the side of the tea pot….lol. They were less that impressed that he got his gross boy germs all over their fancy tea pot :).

Tea party with freinds, Little brothers are weird lol.... practical gift ideas for little girls

matthew hypoplastic left heart syndrome, turns 12

Tomorrow is a pretty big day for our family.  My son Matthew turns 12 years old.  If you have followed my blog for awhile you know that he was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, he was born missing the whole left side of his heart. From day one he has been a fighter, and every day has been nothing shy of a miracle and gift from God.

My sweet little baby boy that was so very handsome, and had wisdom beyond his years has turned into a handsome young man as well.  He is doing well but still has moments that remind me just how fragile he is.  On Friday he became over tired and went from being a happy boy at school, to pale, weak and needed to come home and rest in just a matter of minutes.  As I watched him sleep, my heart sank just a little praying that he was just tired and that he would be back to normal soon.  Sure enough we woke up from his nap, ready to face the rest of the day full speed ahead.

12 years is pretty special to any child… but to our family it is simply remarkable!  Feeling so very blessed!

momy moments super hero

It’s bright and early and my girls are screaming that their big brother Matthew is messing up their make up. I see no harm done and tell the girls to stop yelling and play nice. Then the mask comes off and the crime is revealed…. he got little brother in on it too. Never a dull moment at our house. Little stinkers.
