How to Make a White Castle Burger

We created this post a few years ago it was not planned, we were making White Castle Burgers for dinner and decided to snap a few last minute photos on our phone.  But when I see this recipe photos I have to cringe a little… so I decided to keep the recipe as is, but I wanted to add a few updated photos. Yes I know it is a fast food recipe so who cares if it is pretty or not… but it just makes me feel better having a photo that is actually in focus, lol. Enjoy!

White Castle Burger Copycat recipeSo many grew up on the famous White Castle burgers. They are even know as the first chain restaurant! So how do you make a White Castle Burger or “Slider“? It is quite easy and I will even show you an easy way to cook them up too so you get the nice thin patty of meat! And the best part out side of taste is that they are cooked in the oven! Yes cook your hamburger in the oven in 20 mins! The patties come out so nice and flat and are cooked perfectly on the onions!

  • 1 pound Hamburger – 80/20 is best
  • 2/3 cup Onion – finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup plain bread crumbs
  • 1 package Dinner Rolls

Thoroughly mix meat.

white castle burger recipe holesSpoon portions of hamburger on top of onions. Evenly spoon meat around top of onions. Pat meat evenly on top of onions to cover entire pan. Then with straws poke holes close and evenly over entire meat. This allows the onion juice to rise through the meat, just as they do at White Castle.

Place in pre-heated oven at 400 F (bake) for 20 mins

Remove and cut into squares the size of your rolls

  • Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper

  • ¼ cup plain bread crumbs
  • 1 package Dinner Rolls
Instructions
  1. Mix hamburger in bowl with black pepper, bread crumbs and eggs.
  2. Thoroughly mix meat.

7 Quick and Easy Tips How to Cook the Perfect Steak

Summer is here which makes my brain think BBQ and GRILLING season is here.  It helps keep the kitchen cool and food over an open fire is just AMAZING when cooked right. Cooking the Perfect Steak is tricky to make just right, but it can be done. Here are my tips and tricks on how to cook the perfect steak every time! Learn from my errors because the perfect steak mistakes don’t come cheap!

1. Season,season,season: Add salt before cooking to add flavor and draw out water so you get a super crispy crust. I personally really enjoy the McCormick Montreal Steak seasoning, and some lemon pepper seasoning.  Hold off on adding additional pepper or fresh herbs until just before serving to prevent burning.

2. Sear: In order to get that crunchy crust on the outside of your steak, you need to sear the meat. Heat vegetable or canola oil in a pan until it just begins to smoke. Then add your meat. If you hear a loud sizzle you’re doing it right!

3. Cook: After you sear each side for 3-4 minutes cook to your desired level of doneness. The total cooking time depends on the size and cut of your steak.

4. Temperature: The easier way to tell whether your perfect steak is done to your liking is to use a meat thermometer.

Rare Steak:120 degrees Fahrenheit

Medium Rare: 130 F

Medium:140

Medium Well: 150

Well Done: 160

5. Reduce heat and add butter: Just before your steak is done, reduce the heat to medium add 2-3 tablespoons of butter, freshly ground black pepper, and any fresh herbs you’d like. Constantly spoon butter over your steak. Switch sides and repeat.

6. Let your meat rest. Never cut your meat immediately after it’s done cooking. By letting it rest you will keep all those delicious juices inside which will make the meat moist.

7. Cut against the grain. Your knife should be at a right angle (L shape) to the grain(lines on the meat).

 French Bread Pizza ~ Easy Make Ahead Camping Recipe

When I go camping I like to have easy meals, but I also like to have warm hearty meals that will fill my kids tummies.  I love camping recipes that can be prepped and made ahead of time, this is one of our families favorite campfire recipes. These french bread pizzas can be made before you even leave for your trip, I like to then freeze them. Keep them in the cooler and then when you are ready to cook them toss them right on the coals of the fire to cook.

  • French Bread (or mini french bread loaves)
  • Softened cream cheese
  • Grated Mozzarella Cheese
  • Pizza or marinara sauce
  • Pizza toppings ( pepperoni, canadian bacon, olives, pineapple, mushrooms, bell peppers, sausage)
  • Aluminum Foil (heavy duty)
  • Gallon sized ziploc bags (to store them in)

Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on top of the cream cheese. Layer your pizza toppings and cheese, add the top back on your french bread. Wrap with heavy duty foil, I like to make sure it is wrapped at least two times. This helps it heat more even and avoid being burned.

Easy Camping Recipes ~ French Bread Pizza

I store these in a large gallon ziploc bag, since ice in coolers often melt and leak. The ziploc back will help keep them dry until you are ready to cook them. I then put them in the freezer,  before the ice chest orcooler to help keep them cool on your trip.  Make sure they are thawed before you put them on the fire to cook. It is best to put them on the coals of the fire (instead of the flames). Turn them a few times to help them cook evenly, about 5-8 minutes on the fire and you should have a hot and yummy french bread pizza!

Homemade Finger Steak

I was surprised when a friend look confused when I said I was making finger steaks for dinner. She had never heard of a Homemade Finger Steak. Out west we have them all the time, in restaurants, at school even at home. Its a great way to use up meat in a new and different way. Sometimes its a great way to get kids to eat meat since they can use their hands!

 I got a great deal on roast one day and I had the man at the meat counter slice one of them  into, 6 one inch steaks.  They do it for free, and it saves me time.  I then am able to use these steaks for stew, stir fry or what ever.  I normally use one steak right away and then freeze the rest in bags.

For Homemade Finger Steak, I cut the meat across the grain, into thin strips. it’s important to make sure you cut against or across the grain of the meat. Slicing the fibers into small sections makes just about any tough meat or good meat into super soft and tender meat!   One large steak is enough to feed my family.  It makes about 25 finger steaks.

In a bowl mix :

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 packet dry onion soup mix
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup milk

Add the meat  to the mixture, cover and refrigerate for up to 3 hours or cook right away if ready to eat.

When you are ready to cook, pull meat strips out with a fork, and fry in oil on medium-high heat.

It takes about 1 minute on each side, or till golden brown.  Drain on paper towel.

  2. Mix Egg, Onion Soup mix, flour, milk all in a bowl
  3. Add the meat to the mixture, cover and refrigerate for up to 3 hours if needed or cook right away.
  4. When you are ready to cook, pull meat strips out with a fork, and fry in oil on medium-high heat.
  5. It takes about 1 minute on each side, or till golden brown. Drain on paper towel.
  6. Enjoy with any condiment
