A Thrifty Mom – Topics

Thanks to  No time to be bored for this money saving  idea.  It made me smile because this is SO something my own Mom would have made.  My kids pajama tops are always to short so I LOVE this idea.

Extending the life of clothes – making tops longer

By ~ No time to be bored

I think most moms recognize how fast kids outgrow their cute clothes. I found a way of making tops last longer, using some old t-shirts from myself that were on my ‘donation’ pile. It’s really fast and easy, I added this extra layer to these 2 pajama tops in about 15 minutes! So why not give this a try?

This would also work for boys’ clothes, with one little adjusment. I will give a step-by-step tutorial, I didn’t take pictures of the separate steps, but it’s so simple that you don’t really need the pictures to go with this.

1. Take the top that got too short, and find a t-shirt in a matching or contrasting color. For most clothes, even a simple white t-shirt would create a cute, layered look.

2. Cut off the bottom part of the t-shirt, about 1 inch longer than you want the bottom layer to finally be.

3. Flip the part you just cut off inside out. Measure how wide your kid’s top is. Zigzag the side of the part you cut off (inside out) so that it has the same width.

4. Then, trim off the excess fabric. Next, stitch on the inside of your zigzag with a straight stitch.

5. Now there are 2 different ways to proceed, depending if you want a ruffly bottom (like pictured) or just a simple, straight bottom.

For the ruffly bottom: Zigzag the raw edge of the “tube” you created with a small zigzag stitch. It will end up curly looking like the pictures above. Then, pin the tube with the finished edge underneath the bottom of the shirt, and attach with a straight stitch. (I just followed the seams that were already there to make it look neater. So you might want to do that twice if there where 2 originally.)

For a straight bottom: pin the raw edge of the “tube” you created underneath the shirt. Attach with a straight stitch. (I just followed the seams that were already there to make it look neater. So you might want to do that twice if there were 2 originally.)

And that’s it!

This would be even quicker if you would use a shirt that is of the same width, so basically combine 2 outgrown shirts. That way steps 3 and 4 could be skipped.

Before sale price or coupons this would have cost $6.36

I was able to get for FREE just paid .24 tax (.6 for each purchase)

But I got back $4 in register reward, making this a $3.76 money maker

One thing I teach in my coupon classes is to NOT buy something just because it has a coupon or just because it is free.  When I talk to people that “use to” coupon they often tell me they quit because they found they were buying products just because they had a coupon and where a good deal.  Many of these foods they did not really want in there home so they quit couponing.

Well this week I broke one of my own rules…. Starbucks Refreshers are free with coupon, but also turn into a money maker after register reward.  I do not drink coffee or tea so there is no reason for me to buy them.  BUT I plan to donate them to the food bank.  I can then use the $1.00 RR towards other things my family needs.  Making this a worth while item to purchase even though I will not use them myself.

We were asked if we would like to review the Mighty Max Cart.  I had never heard of them before but thought Matt would enjoy another “man toy” in the garage.  Last week we bought new sofas (well new to us, yard sale find), but they are double recliners and they were so heavy were were not able to lift them.  I was ready to call some friends to help us get them off the trailer.  But Matt was determined to do it himself.  When he told me he was going to use the Might Max Cart to move them…. I thought he has gone mad.  I thought this cart might just bust apart under the weight of these sofas.  He got them on the cart with no trouble, they looked a little bit like an mouse caring an elephant.  But they held up just fine, pushed with ease, turned on a dime and made this hard task simple as could be.

Might Max Carts start low as $99.00 with free shipping options on their site.   They are made from natural, nontoxic materials. Although built to last many years, the entire cart may be recycled. All of Might Max products have an unconditional, 30-Day, Money-Back Guarantee. Ingard here, ions ago I did Weight Watchers and came across this recipe for a

Fat Free delicious cake that was very low in WW points

(how many WW points you ask, sadly it is lost in the hamster wheel in my head now, LoL)

Ingredients are:

Angle Food cake mix (in my area prices ranged from $2.29 to $1.89 ~ you can use store or name brand)

1 can of crushed pineapple (20oz)

While the direction on the box don’t request a greased or even greased and floured Angel Food Cake Pan

pan preparation is optional (I have done it both ways)

dump crushed pineapple in cake mix and stir until well blended

(be sure to give yourself a bowl with room as it expands with bubbles :)

Bake as directed on package for your pan choice. Allow to cool then turn cake out of pan.

This could be made in a 13×9 pan as well and be just an delicious.

****************

Now here is my confession.

I hadn’t made this in several years and in my memory it was puffy like an Angel food cake can be.

You are seeing my 3rd attempt at getting this pretty and still flat fallen cake.

Now don’t get me wrong the other 2 cakes were happily consumed and were delish!

In fact this one fell as well and was also happily consumed (good thing it is Fat Free).

I asked Matt to get our 2 year old ready so he could go outside and play.

This is NOT exactly what I was looking for…….  I guess this is a good reason my children have a Mother :) .

DIY Pencil Flowers ~ by Tiffany
Here’s an inexpensive craft that you can do with your kiddos. I bought everything you need to make these pencils at the dollar store. I saw sunflower pencils at a craft fair a few years ago. Very simple, with a sunflower and green stem wrapped around the pencil. They looked easy enough and it gave me an idea back then. I wanted to make flower pencils with some spunkiness by adding lots of colors. Who says a flower has to have a green stem, right? Or who says you can’t mix different color petals together for the fun of it?! That’s what makes these fun. Kids aren’t afraid of bright colors, my kids bring out the ”Rainbow Brite” in me when it comes to crafts. If you need a little inspiration with color, call the kiddos, they’ll know just what to do. :)   Wouldn’t these make a cute party favor? I was thinking about tying one with ribbon around a diary for a young girl as a gift. Or you could surprise your little girl by putting one in her back pack with a special note tied to it. For the adults in your life you could switch out the pencil for a pen. I love mine. I feel all cutesy when I write with it. I’m all “Girly girl” what can I say. :)

Flower Pencil DIY1Supplies needed:

  • Pencils or pens (try and find colored or printed ones for a spunkier flower)
  • beads (variety of colors)
  • flowers (your choice and your color)
  • pipe cleaners, variety of colors
Flower Pencil DIY2Directions, Remove the middle of the flower, separate petals.
Flower Pencil DIY4Stack desired colored petals on top of each other (about 4-5).
Flower Pencil DIY5String the colored bead of your choice onto one of the pipe cleaners.Flower Pencil DIY6
Then push the pipe cleaner through the middle part of the flower.
Flower Pencil DIY7 Wind the shorter end of the pipe cleaner around the longer end to secure.
Flower Pencil DIY8Next, wind the rest of the pipe cleaner down around your pencil or pen.Flower Pencil DIY9
