Falling in Love with your Family by Alison

In a Nutshell: State expectations instead of asking Stupid Parent Questions

(By Bill Watterson)

Does this scenario sound familiar?  Maybe a little too familiar?  Most parents could easily qualify for the SPQ Hall of Fame.  What?!  You’ve never heard of this elite recognition?  SPQ’s are Stupid Parent Questions and I’ve earned my share of fame in the past 14 years.  I don’t know where SPQ’s come from, but they must be programmed into our DNA because parents use them almost universally.  You’ve probably heard variations on these common ones:

Where do you think you are going in those shorts!?!

How many times have I told you to close the door behind you!?!

Do you think money grows on trees!?!

Do you want to go to time-out!?!

Why did you color on mommy’s wall!?!

What am I going to do with you!?!

SPQ’s practically beg, “Pleeaasse…pretty pretty pleeaasse …answer with a smart-aleck remark!”  If you ask your child, “How many times do I have to tell you to finish your homework?” don’t be shocked and appalled if they answer, “79.”  Really, how can a kid resist it?  What did you expect?

Generally, SPQ’s can be rephrased as statements of expectation.  A child misbehaving at the park shouldn’t hear over and over from a bench-glued parent, “Do you want to go home!?!”  Instead Mom could go to the misbehaving child, look her firmly in the eye and say, “Stop throwing sand.  That hurts eyes.  If you play nicely, we’ll stay at the park.”  Then if one more grain of sand flies, the kid is loaded in the car.

For another example, imagine a child playing video games instead of taking out the trash as he’s been asked.  Dad walks into the room and says, “What are you doing!?!”  The child is obviously playing video games, as even the most technology-challenged adult could see.  Simply state an expectation: “You need to take out the trash before you play games.”  Or, if this is a pattern, impose a consequence: “Because you chose to play instead of taking out the trash, you’ll need to wait until tomorrow to use your game system again.”

Be direct, consistent, and calm by stating expectations, not sarcastic, exasperated, and a little on the dippy side by constantly asking questions that have no real answers.  SPQ’s generally just invite confrontation and put more emphasis on the wrong behavior instead of on the expectation of good behavior.  Recognize when you use SPQ’s, and be done with them.  Besides, how many times do I have to tell you?  They make parents sound pretty dumb.

WALGREENS TIPS

  • Some store have placed limits on coupon deals to read more click here
  • To view Walgreens official coupon policy click here
  • Can I use a coupon and still have a Register Reward print, click here.
  • I always check out at the cosmetics counter, and if anyone comes behind me I let them go first, so I do not hold up the line.
  • One thing to remember about Walgreens RR (register reward) is you can not use a “chap stick RR” to pay for another chap stick and have another RR print. BUT you can use a “toothpaste” RR to pay for chap stick and have another RR print.
  • Also remember that Walgreens has a coupon item ratio rule, you can only use as many coupons as you have items. They count RR as coupons. So if I was only buying 4 items ( all of which had manufacture coupons which meant my item coupon ratio was already 4 to 4) I wanted to pay with a RR I would need to ad a filler item something cheap like a pencil. This would then make my coupon ration 5 ( 4 manufacturer coupons and 1 register reward) and my item ratio 5. I then could pay with my coupons and RR with no problem. An instore coupon does NOT count as a coupon in this ratio….just as a sale price.
  • Also remember that only one RR per product will print per transaction. For example If wanted to buy 3 bottles of Aussie shampoo. In order to have 2 RR print for each one I had to buy them in 3 transactions. My store is happy to let me go thru the line more than once ……but some store will limit you.
  • You can not pay for sales tax with a RR

No one likes to eat fruit that is brown from being exposed to the air.  So I loved this simple and thrifty tip to keep you apples pretty looking and easy to share.  Perfect for picnics or car trips with the family.  When you cut up an apple cut it into 9 parts like a cube.  To keep it from turning brown use a  rubber band to hold it together in its original apple shape.

Thanks to Home With Real Food for the photo and tip

I was asked if I would like to try Aquaphor products and give some away to my readers as well.  If you suffer from chronically dry skin like me you know that often lotions just do not cut it.  You need something to hydrate your skin and protect it as well.  Aquaphor Healing ointment does just that.  The product is much thicker than your typical creams or lotions… it takes a little bit to work it into your skin. But really does help heal your skin (or at least it does mine). One of the best features is it is fragrance FREE so it works for all ages, boy or girl!

Little more info on theese two product

  •   Aquaphor Healing Ointment – Dermatologists trust this product to protect and relieve dry, cracked skin. It is also used by athletes to help prevent friction burns, blisters and chafing that intense physical activity can often cause.
  • Aquaphor Lip Repair - Enriched with shea butter, vitamins C and E, and soothing chamomile essence, Aquaphor Lip Repair provides immediate and long-lasting relief, and seals in moisture – perfect for soothing chapped lips after outdoor runs, skiing, or whenever your lips feel very dry.

Also make sure you also check out the  Aquaphor Winter Sports Gear Sweepstakes. Just head to the Aquaphor Facebook page and follow the instructions to enter to win $3,000 worth of new winter sports equipment! It’s as easy as that.

Thanks to Aquphor  for sending me this package to review and providing one to  giveaway as well. I was not paid for this post and all options are my own. Last day to enter the giveaway is 2/18/12 at 10pm mtn time. You must supply a valid email address at time of posting comment. We never sell or trade emails. Winner will be chosen by Random.org.
