We originally posted on this a few months ago and it recently came up in an email and thought it was worth reposting. With the Extreme Couponing shows there are so many more couponers that stores are having to adapt to.

Is your store stocked or cleared out?
I know some of you new coupon shoppers are feeling rather let down, as you put forth the effort to plan the perfect shopping trip. Only to get to the store and find the shelves empty. I wish I had the perfect answer but unfortunately I do not, but here are a few tips I have learned over the years.

Few reasons the store may not have the items in stock:

More coupon shoppers- TLC ‘s new show Extreme Couponing has really brought a lot of attention to couponing in the last month. I was talking with my local store manager and he said they have seen a dramatic increase. There are more coupon binders in the store than ever before, which they love. They are working hard to order in enough products but do not want to be stuck with overstock either. It is a balancing act, and they will get better at knowing supply and demand as time goes on.

Store has a limited supply- Many stores like Walgreens only get an allotted number of the hot promo items for that week. They are more of a quick-stop-shop store NOT a warehouse. This number is normally based on past sales and earning. Stores that get a limited supply are great to get a good deal at….BUT we do not encourage you to stock up or buy large quantities.

Stores do not know of sales that match with coupons- Most stores are aware of the upcoming sales and what their projected sales may be. BUT what many of them do not know is the coupons that may match up with these sales. Thus turning an “ok sale” into a stock up frenzy. For example a store may know that $.50 for a bottle of Propel water is a good price and they may sell 500 bottles, and order accordingly . But they may not know there is a $1.00 off 2 coupon making them FREE. Which means they now have more people wanting the item and the need goes from 500 bottles to 2,500. Most stores would love to move 2,500 bottles they just need to know ahead of time, so they can order in time. I encourage you to get to know your store managers, tell them about upcoming match ups and help them know what to order.

Some stores value coupon shoppers others do not- Not all stores understand the benefit of having coupons used in their store. I have met personally with some store managers that are clueless as to how coupons work, and the fact they they do in fact get paid by the manufacturer for the full face value of the coupons PLUS an $.08 handling fee. They see it as a hassle, choose not to stock up for sales, and really wish you would shop somewhere else. If this is the case, the only advice I have is to try and educate them with a smile, or if you are a chicken like me shop somewhere else :)

When to shop- You need to be aware that there are better times to shop than others. The first day of the sale, or the day they restock is normally the best time. Early morning is often a good time, because they restock at night at many stores. Don’t hesitate to ask when the next shipment comes in and plan accordingly. Also do not get upset if you walk in the last day of the sale and find empty shelves, as much as the store would love to have every product you want….. do not take it personally if others get to the items first.

Place and order- Many stores will allow you to place an order, if you are buying in large quantities. This will allow you to get what your family needs but not take away from others. Most of my local stores do NOT do this, but I know many other areas do.

Other coupon shoppers clear the shelves - Yes it is sad but not everyone’s Mommy taught them to “play nice” and some couponers will clear the shelves, and buy many more than they really need. BUT getting upset at others actions, really does not help anything. Do not spend hours mourning the loss of your “could have been deal”. Try to lead by example and show the better way to shop. Also do not be to quick to judge, many people will say all I wanted was one…. and that lady took 6. What you may not know is that lady has 10 kids, and she drove 45 minutes to get to the store. Everyone’s needs are different, and if they really are just being greedy then shame on them… but it does us no good to judge others :)

Most important rule of all THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER SALE- do not let coupons rule your life. Getting a good deal is fun, and helps me provide for my family….. it needs to fit into my life but not take over my life. If you try to hit every sale, and shop every store you will in deed get lots of good deals but at what price? Freebies or good deals are never worth it, if it means my kids do not have time with Mommy. If you miss out on a sale it is ok, another one will roll around……

What tips do you have? I would love to hear them

Debt Free Zone – part 2

10/04/2011 10:02 am · 2 comments

debt freeSo as I mentioned in the last post, it seems that it is harder to find good budgeting advise and software to go with it. You can read more on my first post here. I have no accounting education background, and I actually do not like math, it was my worst subject. I have no degree in financial education or advising. So legally I can not help you. But what I can tell you is how we budget, how we got debt free, and what we currently budget with. Experience is all I have.

I mentioned before how I used note pads and a ruler to plot out my bills and credit card debt over $10,000. Every day I would sit down and evaluate where we were financially. We were able to scrimp and save and live a thrifty lifestyle long before we ever thought of running a thrifty blog. So how do we plan our budget now? Like before I hate the idea of charging people to learn how to be thrifty and live on a budget. Many programs both online, consulting and software all charge you flat fees and subscriptions. But with Mint.com it is all free and comprehensive. You can plan a budget, set goals and review and add all of your financial institutions and accounts. It updates and recompile’s itself on a routine basis. You can track your spending, get updates when things are purchased, and when payments are received. Mint.com will send you reminders on a schedule that you set up. It gives you tips to save and ways to plan for the future.

We have every thing set up with them. Our mortgage, our investments and incomes, our bills and utilities, checking and savings, everything. You may ask about it’s security and how it protects its data? Well Mint.com is a sub-company of Intuit, the makers of Quickbooks and Turbo Tax. They have an excellent security program already in place.

You can check out Mint.com and see if it fits you. Don’t be to prideful to think you can do it all on your own. SO much happens in our life that it makes it near impossible to manage everything. This is why we use Mint.com In my next post we will explain how to get things set up if you think this is something for you.

If you have debt – don’t feel like you are trapped. There are steps available to get out of the incredible weight of financial burden. Follow along in my mini-series of post, to start your path in a new thrifty living life. Being “thrifty” is so much more then couponing!

Debt Free Zone – part 1

10/03/2011 10:02 am · 2 comments

debt freeThe economy in today’s world is so topsy turvy. You can not expect anything to turn out how the professionals say it will. Who knows what country, state, company, or person will default on a bill? With money you can never expect anything. So what are we to do?

The average credit card debt in the USA is about $16,000. And with the economy and so many people loosing their jobs or receiving a pay deduction, the ability to handle the monthly bills much less the credit cards minimum payments is near impossible. There are so many different sources to help and give advice. Which ones should you follow? Which ones are really there to help you verse take your money to benefit them self? I could never understand why some one wanting to help others save money and get out from under the burden of debt would charge those in financial need.

To make things worse it seems that banks are trying to find ways to squeeze even more out of their customers. Many of us have dropped the credit card to turn to debit cards. The idea has always seem good. You still got to use a card and not carry cash, and yet did not have to worry about paying back the bill because it was automatically deducted out of your checking account. But with the Bank of America now going to charge debit card holders a monthly fee, and other raising their atm fees to near $5 a swipe, it seems like cash might becoming the new in thing. And why not?

Many of you who have been to Sarah’s class, might remember in the beginning she mentions how much debt I brought in to the marriage. It was a little over $10,000.  In just about a year and a half we were able to get out of debt! How? Well we only made minimum wage and had to change our spending habits. We both made minimum wage. We ate cheap, very cheap. Our meals consisted of potatoes and at dinner would eat potatoes. Every now and then we added noodles or dumplings that were home made with flour and eggs when we had them. No it wasn’t fun, and no we didn’t enjoy weeks and years of potatoes. But the reward of being debt free out weighed the meals and thrifty life style.

How we managed to get out of debt so quick, on minimum wage was with a little note pad and a pen. Every day at my desk at work I would review and check my note pad. I set up my note pad with columns and and rows. Each row was designated a bill. I started on top with the most important. I wrote down the mortgage, then the car, the insurance, then utilities and on to the credit cards. With credit cards I figured out which ones had the highest interest rate and then figured out which had the highest balance. If the rates were similar I would write down which one had the lowest balance first. And the ones with the higher interest rate next. Each paycheck I divided out what little we made into to the columns on the note pad. As months went on I stapled them together and developed a little journal of our progress. As the columns and rows became smaller and smaller, we both began to realize how close we were to financial freedom.

That was over 10 years ago. Now a days with the internet and more and more information out there to help others, there are many ways online to accomplish a debt free life. One online resource we use in Mint.com. In line with my theory of not having to pay for things – Mint.com is FREE. In the next few days and weeks, we will review the steps to become debt free.  Any questions you have on Mint.com feel free to comment here.

So it seems 3D movies are sticking around. They have perfected the quality with 3D and created a whole lot of fun! And with more and more movies being made into 3D, TV’s are  made with it, and even cell phones have the ability to record in 3D. It seems like it has become a part of our culture now.
When ever we go to a 3D movie they hand every one a pair of those plastic shades that make the movie fun! We sit there and eat our popcorn and duck and weave to the oncoming effects. Once the popcorn bucket is gone, and the credits start to roll we all make a dash for the car. On the way there are those “Recycle your 3D glasses” bins. We have all seen them and almost by habit we toss our free shades into the bin and walk out to the car to leave.
STOP – don’t toss your free shades!
Save them – store them away in your entertainment area of your home. WHY?
Well let me give you the back ground -
The 3D glasses they hand out have been, up till now, paid for by the movie theater and by the production company that made the movie. Each pay fifty percent of the cost of the glasses…. for now.

In May 2012 – the cost of the glasses will be not paid by them any more
WE will! Yes that’s right!
So start now and break the habit of tossing those shades into the recycle bins. Keep them. You are not required to leave them at the theater… Save them for next year.

Its only a few months away and with so many 3D options out there now –

Keep them for your own Thrifty Movie adventure.

You know, my mom taught me so many things through my life, that it is hard to pin-point just one that was most important, but ironically, I now realized it something she taught me just recently that is the one that sticks with me most. We have never been a really close family but we have had several hard years, losing family members and lost jobs, times being tight with no money and too much stress. My mom sent me a CD and on it was a song by George Strait called “The breath you take.”

“You just might miss the point, trying to win the race. Life’s not the breath you take, its the moments that take your breath away.”

No matter how tough times are or how sad, stressed, angry, disappointed, we have to focus on the things that are most important, our family, our children, loved ones, and the time spent with them. We could all benefit from slowing down and enjoying the ones we love and being grateful for what we are blessed with, instead of focusing on the bads.

Growing up in Arizona, my mom taught me to make sun tea. Pot some tea bags in a big glass jar, cover the top, and stick it out in the sun fow a few hours to all day. The heat of the sun does all the work. You have delicious tea and it’s a very frugal thing to do since you don’t use the stove or microwave to boil the water for the tea so you’re not using any gas or electricity.

Mom always said, “life is not a one way street” this is true on so many levels! life is about give and take and sharing, this is a good way to be thrifty as well! thanks for the chance to win!

My mom taught me that family comes first, I spend as much time with family as I can.
Lisa
My mother has always told me, especially when I was a child, “You can do anything you want in your life if you try hard enough.” Obviously there are a few exceptions to this statement, but living by this mantra has helped me to achieve some incredibly miraculous things in my life. Thanks Mom!
Katie
My mother taught me that if you can’t afford to buy it, you can’t afford to borrow it!! Some people might not think this is thrifty advice, but I do and it is SO true!

My mom taught me this little trick that is a winner: If you are making a casserole for the family, NEVER call it a casserole because it automatically turns people off. Make up some fancy name and they will eat it every time! For instance, when I make tuna casserole, I always call it cheesy noodles, I don’t even mention the word “tuna” or the kids won’t touch it! Try it, you’ll be surprised!
Crystal
My mom taught me that when your shopping with kids you can secretly put back the more expensive things when they’re not looking. A good and friendly time to do this is when they’re in the fitting room, that way the department associate doesnt find clothing every where.

I don’t ever remember my mother actually teaching me things on purpose, she led by example. I didn’t even realize I learned so much from her until I was on my own. She taught me how to can, grow a garden, take care of kids, clean toilets (and other rooms) and to use what you had. She also taught me to love your husband and honor him and to appreciate your family. It took me awhile to realize why my kids didn’t want to learn things when I wanted to teach them. You learn it, and didn’t even know it.

Liz-

My mom always taught me how to do a weekly menu. After making the Menu she taught me how to create a shopping list from what meals we would be eating. This sure has helped ever since I left home and went to college and then it helped me a lot after getting married.

Meme-

Something else my mom taught me was when your brown sugar gets hard and lumpy add a piece of bread to it wait overnight. It will be soft and usable again. We also lived in an area that did not have many stores nor get coupons so mom taught us to know the prices on products, shop with a list and be willing to go to multiple stores. The list helped because when its a half an hour drive to the nearest grocery store you aren’t going to forget something you need and pay 3x’s the price at the closest convience store which was still 5 miles away.
Couponbellastad-

We are a charcoal grilling family. When you fire up the grill, don’t cook for only one meal…cook for several! Grilled hamburgers, brats, chicken, and pork taste just as good the next day.
