How to get kids to eat veggies

So the other day I was sitting on the couch working on my laptop, when my youngest daughter, Maleeya, jumped up and went to get a snack. She ran back in with a bag of carrots, some ranch, and a plate. She was giggling with excitement.  She loves her veggies. In fact our oldest son Matthew loves his broccoli and his brussel sprouts, and his absolute favorite is any kind of salad. Mckeely, our oldest daughter loves broccoli, and our Chicken with Mandarin Orange Salad the other night, she proclaimed was in her top 3 favorite meals.

So how do you get your kids to love eating their vegetables? Maybe we are just blessed to have veggie loving kids, but in the post I will lay out some of my thoughts on how to accomplish a veggie loving family.

First – at a young age we start our babies on pureed or smashed “real food”. We have never been the family to stock up on canned baby food. Mainly because a while ago we did a “Fear Factor” family reunion and used baby food as the event. Have you ever tasted that stuff? Yuck! If an adult wont eat it, why should we put our kids through that. So if we have chicken, potatoes and broccoli for dinner, then that is what the baby will get. Just in smaller portions, and if they are too young then we hold the protein. It’s a wonder what a small blender or a good smashing with a fork can do!

Second – we always have a lot of veggies laying around the house. A large bowl of fruit and veggies – even flowing on to the surrounding counter. Our fridge is stocked with it. Every shelf! Bountiful Baskets helps with the surplus of healthy food in our house.  If it is laying around in reach of the little ones, they will choose it over something out of sight and hard to reach.

Third – Push it early. Don’t wait till you think they need it, or old enough to chew it. Find ways to give it to them early. Pureed as said above, juice it, and most of all eat it your self. If you don’t like it find new ways to make it, that do taste good. Some times the additional extras added to the vegetable side dish might in its self be less healthy, but if you can sneak more healthy food onto their fork then in the long run it is better for them. A little sugar, or bacon added to a dish goes a long way to make it taste better. Check out our Recipe posting for some great tips!

Fourth – Two bite challenge – When ever our kids think they do not like something we challenge them. They know they have to eat two bites. One bite they can sneak around and not eat enough of the side dish to actually get the full flavor. So two bites, gives them a higher chance to experience the full flavor. Any time our kids say they don’t like the dish, before the two bite challenge, about 80% of the time they realize they actually do like it and end up eating every bite.  Just the other day at Sarah’s family get together, a few of the cousins said they didn’t like a dressing Sarah made for the Sweet Shredded Pulled Pork Taco’s she made. Their parents didn’t encourage them to try it, so we challenged them to the two bite challenge! Out of the three that said they didn’t like it in the beginning - Two actually liked it in the end!

Before sale price or coupons this would have cost $19.08

I was able to get it  for $5.55

A few weeks ago Waglreens had a great sale on theater candy and coupons to go with it… making it a really thrifty deal.  Well I did not get to the store as soon as I would have liked so they were gone.  Being that is was NOT a Register Reward deal I just asked for a rain check.

Tip, you do need to keep track of the expiration date of the coupons so you can still get the lowest price… Often in couponing you will find empty shelves and this is one way to still get the deal.

How many of you ask for rain check, and what tips can you offer?

rain check n.

1. A ticket stub entitling the holder to admission to a future event if the scheduled event is canceled because of rain.
2. An assurance to a customer that an item on sale that is sold out or out of stock may be purchased later at the sale price.
3. A promise that an unaccepted offer will be renewed in the future

How to Can Meat

02/27/2012 4:02 pm · 25 comments

One of our readers Amber H. sent us this guest post on canning meat. She shows you how each step goes and can help you save money by getting your meat on sale, buying in bulk, and canning it to use later. Doing this can help your stockpile, save on the electric freezer bill because you wont need to put this in the freezer!

How to can meat.
Put your jars, lids and rings in the dishwasher and run them through the rinse cycle.  You want them warm when you put them in your canner.
Roast beef:  Trim the fat.  Cut into chunks.
Put into jars.  1/2 tsp. salt for pints, 1 tsp. salt for quarts.
Rinse the top of the jar before you put the lid and ring on.
Place jars into your canner.  Fill halfway up the jars with warm water.
Put the lid on your canner and seal it.  Turn burner on high. When you see steam start coming out of the top of the lid put 10 minutes on the clock.
When timer goes off place your 15 lb. weight on the lid.  Wait until the weight starts “rocking.”  (This takes forever.)  When it starts rocking process your roast 75 minutes for pint jars and 90 minutes for quart jars.  When the timer goes off turn your burner off.
Wait until the pressure gauge goes down on your canning lid.  Do not open your canner until this valve goes down.  Take your jars out with a canning jar grabber.  (Is that what they are called, it sounds funny :)  Enjoy your canned roast in a pinch.
Ground Beef or Ground Turkey is canned and processed the exact same way.  Two differences:  You must brown it before you put it into your jars and fill your jars with water.  1/2 tsp salt for pints, 1 tsp for quarts.  Just dump it on the top of the beef before you put your lid on.
Chicken is canned exactly like the roast.  It goes in raw and you DO NOT fill it with water.  It will cook in it’s own natural juices.  You can use the chicken in SO many things.  Enchiladas, casseroles, quesadillas, etc.
So pretty and you will feel SO accomplished!

remove hard water stainReaders Thrifty Tip to Remove Hard Water Stains:

Every time anyone in our home showers or bathes we wipe down the walls and facets, shower heads with a towel . This takes a minute to wipe off the water, but your shower looks brand new! My shower/bath are 6 years old and look just as good now as when it was installed. I used to spend money every week to purchase hard water removal cleaners, now i use them every 6 months or so on the walls and shower doors. Just try it one week and you will be happily surprised at the results!

Thanks Linda!

Yesterday while folding laundry with my 4 year old, she asked me …. why do you  shuv’s (shove) all the blankets in the pillow case?

I told her… cause I have kids.

She giggled and then I explained to her, that it helps mommy keep all the parts to the bed together.  That way in the middle of the night when one of them wets the bed or vomits all over, all I have to do is grab a bundle from the closet.

To do this just fold your sheets as normal, but then tuck them neatly inside the pillow case and fold it over.  You now have a nice little bundle to keep you organized.

Now if you are Martha Stewart then your closet looks like the photo below…. well since I am NOT Martha I will spare you the photo of my closet.  Sure these neat little bundles get placed in there nice and cute. That is till one of my 4 children decide to play hide and seek and empty the shelves in less than 2 seconds flat.  Then when I tell them to clean it back up, they look at me like I am a slave driver.  They get them back in the closet …. but if you come to my house open the door slowly as most the time they are shoved in there, looking all jacked up… and ready to  pop out like a jack-in-the- box wound to tight.   Ahhhh kids are fun… Some day when I am old I will have a pretty linen closet….lol

You are not going to believe this. Ever wonder what the best way to get cheap batteries? How about with out even using a coupon. How could you get thirty two (32) AA batteries for the same price as only 4 AA’s? And they are the exact same brand!!!

One of our readers shared this on our Facebook page. I was amazed when I saw this and thought that we are getting ripped off when we buy batteries! Now that Christmas is over and the kids are burning through batteries playing with their toys, this is a must see!

We originally posted on this a few months ago and it recently came up in an email and thought it was worth reposting. With the Extreme Couponing shows there are so many more couponers that stores are having to adapt to.

Is your store stocked or cleared out?
I know some of you new coupon shoppers are feeling rather let down, as you put forth the effort to plan the perfect shopping trip. Only to get to the store and find the shelves empty. I wish I had the perfect answer but unfortunately I do not, but here are a few tips I have learned over the years.

Few reasons the store may not have the items in stock:

More coupon shoppers- TLC ‘s new show Extreme Couponing has really brought a lot of attention to couponing in the last month. I was talking with my local store manager and he said they have seen a dramatic increase. There are more coupon binders in the store than ever before, which they love. They are working hard to order in enough products but do not want to be stuck with overstock either. It is a balancing act, and they will get better at knowing supply and demand as time goes on.

Store has a limited supply- Many stores like Walgreens only get an allotted number of the hot promo items for that week. They are more of a quick-stop-shop store NOT a warehouse. This number is normally based on past sales and earning. Stores that get a limited supply are great to get a good deal at….BUT we do not encourage you to stock up or buy large quantities.

Stores do not know of sales that match with coupons- Most stores are aware of the upcoming sales and what their projected sales may be. BUT what many of them do not know is the coupons that may match up with these sales. Thus turning an “ok sale” into a stock up frenzy. For example a store may know that $.50 for a bottle of Propel water is a good price and they may sell 500 bottles, and order accordingly . But they may not know there is a $1.00 off 2 coupon making them FREE. Which means they now have more people wanting the item and the need goes from 500 bottles to 2,500. Most stores would love to move 2,500 bottles they just need to know ahead of time, so they can order in time. I encourage you to get to know your store managers, tell them about upcoming match ups and help them know what to order.

Some stores value coupon shoppers others do not- Not all stores understand the benefit of having coupons used in their store. I have met personally with some store managers that are clueless as to how coupons work, and the fact they they do in fact get paid by the manufacturer for the full face value of the coupons PLUS an $.08 handling fee. They see it as a hassle, choose not to stock up for sales, and really wish you would shop somewhere else. If this is the case, the only advice I have is to try and educate them with a smile, or if you are a chicken like me shop somewhere else :)

When to shop- You need to be aware that there are better times to shop than others. The first day of the sale, or the day they restock is normally the best time. Early morning is often a good time, because they restock at night at many stores. Don’t hesitate to ask when the next shipment comes in and plan accordingly. Also do not get upset if you walk in the last day of the sale and find empty shelves, as much as the store would love to have every product you want….. do not take it personally if others get to the items first.

Place and order- Many stores will allow you to place an order, if you are buying in large quantities. This will allow you to get what your family needs but not take away from others. Most of my local stores do NOT do this, but I know many other areas do.

Other coupon shoppers clear the shelves - Yes it is sad but not everyone’s Mommy taught them to “play nice” and some couponers will clear the shelves, and buy many more than they really need. BUT getting upset at others actions, really does not help anything. Do not spend hours mourning the loss of your “could have been deal”. Try to lead by example and show the better way to shop. Also do not be to quick to judge, many people will say all I wanted was one…. and that lady took 6. What you may not know is that lady has 10 kids, and she drove 45 minutes to get to the store. Everyone’s needs are different, and if they really are just being greedy then shame on them… but it does us no good to judge others :)

Most important rule of all THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER SALE- do not let coupons rule your life. Getting a good deal is fun, and helps me provide for my family….. it needs to fit into my life but not take over my life. If you try to hit every sale, and shop every store you will in deed get lots of good deals but at what price? Freebies or good deals are never worth it, if it means my kids do not have time with Mommy. If you miss out on a sale it is ok, another one will roll around……

What tips do you have? I would love to hear them

So it seems 3D movies are sticking around. They have perfected the quality with 3D and created a whole lot of fun! And with more and more movies being made into 3D, TV’s are  made with it, and even cell phones have the ability to record in 3D. It seems like it has become a part of our culture now.
When ever we go to a 3D movie they hand every one a pair of those plastic shades that make the movie fun! We sit there and eat our popcorn and duck and weave to the oncoming effects. Once the popcorn bucket is gone, and the credits start to roll we all make a dash for the car. On the way there are those “Recycle your 3D glasses” bins. We have all seen them and almost by habit we toss our free shades into the bin and walk out to the car to leave.
STOP – don’t toss your free shades!
Save them – store them away in your entertainment area of your home. WHY?
Well let me give you the back ground -
The 3D glasses they hand out have been, up till now, paid for by the movie theater and by the production company that made the movie. Each pay fifty percent of the cost of the glasses…. for now.

In May 2012 – the cost of the glasses will be not paid by them any more
WE will! Yes that’s right!
So start now and break the habit of tossing those shades into the recycle bins. Keep them. You are not required to leave them at the theater… Save them for next year.

Its only a few months away and with so many 3D options out there now –

Keep them for your own Thrifty Movie adventure.
