My daughter had a party last week for her birthday, we did science experiments. The last experiment we did was to see what happened when we put dry ice with water…. it is your very own Dry Ice FOG MACHINE.  It comes spilling over the sides of the bowl and creates a very fun atmosphere for kids to explore and play in.   Perfect for a SPOOKY HALLOWEEN PARTY! I had only planned on the kids playing in the fog for 10 minutes but they loved it so much they played in it for almost 60 minutes!  I thought to myself, WOW this was a simple way to keep them entertained and totally happy!

Add the finger lights

I give the kids Finger Flashlights to shine thru the fog, which made the whole experience even more fun.  A few things you should know before you make your own fog machine.  Dry ice can be harmful if it makes contact with your skin so children need to be supervised at ALL TIMES and never touch the dry ice itself, instead only play in the fog it creates.

Dry ice

Most grocery stores sell dry ice, but you need to call them and ask if they have it in stock.  We found it hard to find it IN STOCK the day we needed it.  It is best to pick up the day of your event as it is hard to keep without melting.  You do need to be over 18 to purchase it and show valid ID (at least in Idaho, might be different in your state).  You will need to bring a cooler to transport it in. Make sure you keep the lid vented so it does not build up gas and explode.  Once you are ready to handle it you need to wear THICK leather gloves to protect your skin.  Place in water and watch the reaction happen and the fog start to bubble over your bowl.

Hints

Never put the dry ice on a title counter the extreme cold could cause it to crack.  If you want the BEST effect place the dry ice in HOT water as it gets colder you will not get as much fog. At this time we would drain some of the water and add more hot water to the bowl.   We bought an eight pound chunk of dry ice at the store, we used it over an hour time period and broke off sections over that hour period to add to the water.

Before you start make sure you talk to the kids about how important it is to NOT touch the dry ice.

Oh, that would be pretty cool for me to maybe introduce for my son’s birthday party. My son doesn’t know yet what my wife and I would be doing later today for his birthday. This neat idea of using dry ice is what got my attention and even if it’s not Halloween, it’s still something that I would want to do. http://www.unitedcityicecube.com

Oh I love the idea of using dry ice at my Halloween party. We throw one every year and I’ve done dry ice in root-beer which is always fun but this seems like a great way to amp that up. I’ll have to get more dry ice then I usually do and have it cover the buffet table to create a fun look.
