How to make a Frozen Elsa Dress, NO SEWING made for less than $10

How to make a Frozen Elsa Dress, NO SEWING required and made for less than $10.00.  Perfect for Halloween, dress up or a Frozen Party.  My cute little niece wants to be Elsa for Halloween. So I decided to see if I could make her a Frozen Elsa Dress, using the same concept that I used to make a Tutu a few years ago. It turned out adorable, so I thought I would show you how to make one too.

Refer to the video  How to make a Frozen Elsa Dress, if you have any trouble.   To make this dress all you need is:

I purchased these supplies at my local craft store (Michael’s to be exact).  I was able to purchase all the supplies for under $10 ( I did use a 50% off coupon on the large spool of white tulle).  BUT if your local store is out, or you don’t have time to shop you can order it online. Most of it ships for FREE too, just make sure to check shipping times.

Start by cutting TWO pieces of  white tulle that will be the main base of the dress.   Measure around the child to see how big around (wide) the dress will be.  Make a small knot to mark the measurement of the child on the strip.  You then need to add at least 2-3 feet on each side of that to allow space for the ties (when you tie the dress on the child). Now you need to tie these two pieces of tulle to a chair, bar stool or something solid so you can start to tie your other tulle strips on to make your dress. Tie them in a bow at the bottom so they are easy to release from the chair.

Now to figure out how LONG your dress needs to be.  You need to cut your dress strips TWICE the height you need the dress to be.  So if you want the dress 2 feet tall you need to cut 4 ft  strips.  I found it is easiest to have the person I am making the dress for reach their arms out side to side and have me wrap the tulle around and around then cut one end for even strips. Their arm width is the same as their height.  If you have a small child this task becomes hard so you can use a piece of cardboard or an adult holding their hands the width of what the child would be.

How many dress strips do you need?  Each dress will vary depends on how big around your child is.  But on average you need two strips per inch around the child.  So if you measured 20 inches around the rib cage, then you are going to need around 40-50 dress strips.

Cut ALL your glitter blue, and blue tulle strips (SAVE one (non glitter strip) back to use as a necktie for the dress).

Start in the middle of the white tulle that you tied to the chairs.  You want to start your first knot on the TOP row.  Fold the tulle in half, create a loop on the top half, put it UNDER the white tulle and then bring the bottom thru the hole to create a knot.  The glitter tulle is stiff and hard to work with, so don’t give up. The other strips will be much easier.

Remember you can refer to the video  How to make a Frozen Elsa Dress, if you have any trouble.

Once you get the upper knot done, you need to then tie a knot on the bottom row of white.  Lay the tulle over the bottom white strip, and wrap the blue tulle up and around to create another knot.  Pull that knot tight and start the process over again.  Do one on each side, over and over till you run out of blue glitter strips.  Next move on and do the same thing with the light blue tulle (without glitter), do one on each side over and over.

Once you are done with all the blue dress strips start adding the white strips.  One to each side, then repeat the process again. Once you are done tie a blue strip right in the middle to use as a neck tie or halter tie. Double check to make sure you have enough white strips to go around to cover the child’s back.

At this point you are done… simple as that you have made a FROZEN ELSA dress.  Low cost, but adorable as can be!  The dress took me less than 30 minutes to make, but if it is your first time it might take you 45 minutes to an hour.

I made this video to show you step by step how to make a Frozen Elsa Dress, feel free to watch it if you have any trouble with the directions or making the dress.  How to make a Frozen Elsa Dress VIDEO, no sewing and made for under $10.00.

AnnaLomsdal Do you have a picture of the dress with cape you made??

  3. I’m making this for my 9 year old, and I picked the stiffest tulle in the world seemingly so that was a very patience trying part and my house is covered in turquoise glitter- but now I’m halfway done with the white tulle and it’s looking awesome. Thanks so much for this idea. I did have some initial trouble figuring out the knots on the two lengths- I am NOT crafty with fabric and really needed it spelled out better- but I figured it out eventually with common sense. Thanks again.

You do not need 50 yards! or 20! wayyyyy to much. my niece is 4 and 3 ft 5 inches. I used 10 yds white, 3 yds blue with sparkles and 3 yds light blue. I ended up spending $30. I made it the same way shown here and still had extra tulle left over. so I made a cape to go with and a crown.

My 7 year old bought a dress at Wal Mart (after MONTHS of searching..LOL). That was a month or so ago. When the time came to discuss Halloween, she said she’d just wear it to the Zoo for their Halloween party and a witch costume to trick or treat. I talked her into the witch at the zoo, when I explained there’d be a ton of Elsa’s at the zoo and it’d be easier to keep an eye on her when she stands out and not blend in! 🙂
