My girls love to help me in the kitchen. This weekend we are making a big bowl of strawberries for strawberry shortcake. All the berries needed to be washed, cored and sliced. ย When my girls help me core the strawberries they often take too much off the top with a knife, or I am worried they might cut themselves with the sharp paring knife.ย ย To this straw trick is the perfect solution.

They are sometimes called milkshake straws or smoothie straws. They are just a normal plastic drinking straw just with a bigger hole and stronger sides, they work great for this project. ย The thin straws do not work as well and you will just get frustrated.

Watch our youtube video on How to core a strawberry with a straw, here.

Kitchen hacks, Stawberry recipes made easy HOW TO CORE A STRAWBERRY WITH A PLASTIC STRAW, this is such a cool trick and perfect for kids helping in the kitchen .Poke the straw in the bottom of the strawberry, push upward towards the stem. You can use your hand your holding the strawberry in to push down on the berry. The straw will pop out of the top taking the core ย and stem with it. If you do not get the straw right in the middle of the core you might have to do it again. But after a few it is easier to judge where the middle is and get it centered every time. My girls are 7 and 10 and did a huge bowl of berries all by themselves. Hope you enjoy this tip ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Your kitchen is so clean! I only have three girls, and my house looks opposite of yours! Love this live feed.

  2. But my huller has been used for years and years and wastes less of the strawberry.

I would only do this if the strawberry is huge and has a hard white center. Otherwise this method removes too much of your delicious strawberry.

A smoothie straw would take way too much strawberry out. A simple V cut with a knife takes off the top.

Just make sure you use a THICK straw like a smoothie or milkshake straw, they work best

  6. I like my little strawberry huller from Pampered Chef. It does the job quickly and easily.

My girls take too much of the top off with a knife. So this tip saved more of the strawberry ๐Ÿ™‚ but someone with better knife skills might do better with the v cut

I tried this and decided it takes too much of the lower strawberry off while just cutting off the top green leaves in a V with a knife works for me.
