This week was Dr. Seuss’s Birthday and many communities celebrated by having reading activities. Reading daily to and with your child prepares them for a lifetime of success in school and a pathway to becoming a life-long learner. When you are sharing a great book, it is a wonderful opportunity to snuggle up, relax, and take a break together. On the other hand, I think I’d rather wash last night’s dried-on dishes than read something that seems geared to the intellectual level of a slug. Luckily, there is some really amazing children’s literature out there. Instead of giving my list, I wanted to see what yours is. So…the Microphone is Open!
What are your favorite books to read aloud? Tell us your favorite books, the authors, and how old the kids are who love them. Take the time to fill us in on your family’s treasures and you may win a free frozen Italian Meal from Michael Angelos. You can just pop dinner in the oven and free up some extra time for reading together! We’ll randomly choose from the responses on Monday. Happy Reading!

@wonderfulhaven updated… IF we do not hear back we will pick another winner
My 5 year old enjoys reading Piggie and Gerald books. Her favorite is We are in a book. My now 17 y/o enjoyed reading Magic Tree House books.
When my twins were young, three favorite books over the years were The Hound Dog by Nancy Hoag, Alexander, the Red Horse with Green Stripes by Harold Littledale, and Miss Nelson Is Missing by Jon Stone. This brings back a lot of precious memories.
When my kids were small, one of the books they loved to read before going to bed was Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. I would read it to them and then they would find the bug. For some reason, they never tired of it.
My 4 year old boy and 6 year old girl love E! Emergency! It is a hilarious book! E gets injured and O has to take over while she recovers. It is a bit of a tongue twister, but it is stock full of little gems to make even the adults laugh.
Anything by Dr. Seuss…even little babies love the sounds of his books. But the one I have memorized is “One Fish, Two Fish”. It’s the most read Seuss book in our house by far! We also love Richard Scarry, and finding Goldbug!
Green Eggs and Ham! You can’t beat classic Dr. Seuss. My 10 year old still likes it! (I also have a 3,5,7,9 year old that enjoy it) The poem Winken, Blinken and Nod by Eugene Field is great for bedtime.
My son is 11 months and we read Goodnight Gorilla every night before bed. He still gets a little restless, but we keep at it. I can’t wait for the night when he will want to read it to me.
My 2 and 4 year olds simply can not go to bed without Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker. They both love trucks right now and really enjoy the illustrations in this book. Our other favorite is Dr. Suess’ A Fly Went By. They love the animals and I love rhyming books!
I am 58. my mom starting reading The Swiss Family Robinson to me and my four year younger sister when I was in the 2nd grade. I finished reading it that same year. LOVE THAT BOOK.
My children are a bit older now and we have loved Magic Tree House books as well as A to Z Mystery books. My children love mystery books!
I have an eight year old and a five year old.
My 2 year old loves Goodnight Moon and Night-Night Little Pookie. We have to read them every night before bed. My 4 year old also loves Good Night Moon and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Which was also my favorite as a child 🙂
When my kids were little they liked Guess How Much I Love You and The Giving Tree.
Charlotte’s Web by EB White and Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo are our favorites! My boys are 9 and 5 and I teach 4th grade…I read them to all of them! 🙂
My favorite book is William Steig’s Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.
Our favorite bedtime story – for all three kiddos 12, 10 and 2 – is “Zombies in Love” by Kely DiPucchio. It’s my favorite too!
My son just turned 4 and he loves many of the Dr Seuss books, especially enjoying Green Eggs and Ham and Oh the Things You Can Do That Are Good For You. I love to read The Monster at the End of this Book (starring loveable, furry old Grover) because it is a favorite of mine from childhood.
My son is hooked on The Bernstain bears and Dr. Suess, Charolettes Web, Dolphin Tales. CherylB1987@hotmail.com
And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. My daughter, 20 now, loved to hear it from birth until she started on harry potter. I’ve kept it for deployment when grandchildren appear!
My son loves Goodnight Moon.

We love, “We’re going on a bear hunt” By Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. It’s got a great sing/song rhythm to it, and the kids just love the ending!
My whole family, adults included read Shel Silverstein out loud. My son is 14 and used one of the poems in a drama competition, which had us all rediscovering the books. My niece is 5 and we read lots of Eric Carle, Dr.Seuss, Robert Munsch and fairy tales.
My two and a half year old LOVES “Dora the Explorer, My Friends” from Nickelodeon books. She has a lot of other books, including a lot of Sesame Street and Tinkerbell, but Dora is her favorite.
My daughter, 1 1/2, loves The Very Hungry Caterpilar by Eric Carle.
My daughter, 8, LOVES listening to me read any Geronimo Stilton book.
My three year old and I like to read Roar of a Snore by Marsha Diana Arnold.
