Split Pea and Ham Soup
When I think of split pea soup, I think of my Grandma. If we ever went out to eat, she ordered Split Pea Soup. As a little kid I just could not wrap my brain around WHY she would order ugly green soup when she could have anything off the menu. But to her, split pea soup was comfort food…. simple, good and she enjoyed every bite. My Grandma passed away a few months ago, I miss her like crazy. But I could not help but smile as I made a big pot of “ugly green soup” for dinner. My kids were not impressed with the color. But all 4 of them asked for 2nds, I think they would also agree this comfort food is going to continue as a family tradition.
To make this recipe you will need:
- 1 bag of dry split peas (1 lb 4 oz) Hurst HamPea’s
- 1 HamPea’s flavor packet (found in bag of peas)
- 8-10 cups water
- 1 large onion diced
- 1 cup diced cabbage
- 1/2 cup celery diced
- 2 large carrots sliced
- 5 Tablespoons Better Than Bouillon chicken stock
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1-2 cups sliced ham
Rinse peas and check for debris. Add peas to a large stock pot, also add water, seasoning packet, onion, cabbage, celery, carrots, bouillon, butter and ham. Bring to a boil, cover with a lid and turn heat down to a simmer. Stir every 30 minutes , cooking time only takes 60-90 minutes. As the peas cook they will start to break down and before you know it you will have a creamy pea soup. If you want it ultra creamy you can put it in a blender to puree it. Just before serving salt and pepper to taste.
You can also serve it cold, topped with sour cream and chives. But I prefer it hot… and it is even better the 2nd day.
