Summer Fun Ideas for the kids 6/13

Each day we will be posting our readers “Thrifty Tips for Entertaining the kids”.  At the end of the month,

one of you will win a $25.00 Gift Card For all the details click here.

If any of you local readers are looking for a great way to re-purpose your  Idaho Press Tribune paper, the last two Sundays they have had  a coloring contest on the back of the paper.  I do not plan to enter the contest, but my kids have had a blast painting the pictures!

We spend lots of time outside blowing bubbles, gardening, splashing each other when it’s super hot out (like today). We go to our local parks and play.

About kids helping you clean…make it a game of who can pick up how many things (make kids count with you) the fastest. Make homemade window cleaners and let the kids use it to help you clean windows and doors (we know all about the little fingerprints). It’s safe for them to use and it will help you out, too.

A fun little snack: Rock ‘n’ Rollers

4 (6-7 inch) wheat flour tortillas
4 oz. Neufchatel cheese, softened (low fat cream cheese available everywhere)
1/3 c. peach preserves
1 c. (4 oz.) shredded fat-free Cheddar cheese
1/2 c. packed washed fresh baby spinach
3 oz. thinly sliced turkey

Spread each tortilla w/ 1 oz. Neufchatel cheese; cover w/thin layer preserves. Sprinkle w/ Cheddar.

Arrange spinach & turkey over Cheddar. Roll up tortillas; trim ends. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Cut “rollers” crosswise in half or diagonally into 1-inch pieces.

I agree with so many of the things already said! Gardening especially (although start up isn’t always cheap). We will be spending lots of time at the free pools and splash pad and musuem free admission days. We will be doing VBS when my son is old enough. We also have 3 or 4 theaters here that do dollar movies in the summer (earlier in the day and g or pg rated).

As for cleaning- Each chore completed earns a dollar/point amount- different points= different prizes (a toy from walmart, trip to the movies, lunch out,new clothes etc). If the chores don’t get done, privelages/belongings get taken away until the chores are done.

There are alot of websites for the central texas area that I refer to daily. My favorit is freefuninaustin She has a calendar of what is free everyday for activities and food as well as a list of VBS and pools, museums, concerts etc that are free.
