DIY Emoji party invitations, teen or tween party idea

I love making invitations for my kid’s birthday parties, but don’t want to take forever or spend a lot of money.

My daughter had a birthday and it was time to come up with something fitting for her.

You will need

Yellow cardstock or construction paper

markers, vinyl or paper in black, white, red

markers to write the party details on the back

scissors or a circle template cutter

I cut my circles in 4 inches and they seem to be perfect for a party invitation.

Begin by cutting your yellow cardstock into circles. I love this Martha Stewart circle cutter that I have had for years. You do need a self healing mat if you are going to use a cutter like this though.

Once you have your circles cut it is time to decorate them. Scraps of vinyl were used and I have the faces used if you are interested in them. I created them myself, so I don’t mind sharing. They were made on my trusty silhouette, so they are in that format, so shoot me a message or post in the comments if you are interested.

Just write your party information on the back and you are done. This would also be cute as a party banner, party coasters, so many options and they are so cute!

DIY Locker Wallpaper For a Fraction of the Price!

This year my daughter starts middle school.  Along with that rite of passage comes her first time using a locker.  She was so excited and wanted to get dress up her locker and make it cool.  I get that.  Until I priced the stuff.  The majority of what I could find was $15 at the least.  Not a price I was willing to pay.  I did research for it, and while it says it is “magnetic locker paper” it is actually basically thick wrapping paper with magnets that come with it to hold up the corners.  That’s it!  What a rip off!  This company is making a killing off of  middle school/ junior high kids!

Considering the fact that I am a tight wad, combined with the fact that I have 3 kids to go school shopping for, locker wallpaper just wasn’t in the budget.  But, I decided why not try to make it on my own?  The only downfall of this is that the stuff you buy comes with the sections cut out for the lock, and coat hooks.  Big deal!

I had my daughter pick out some wrapping paper she loved.  Since it was less than $3 a roll, I let her pick two.  Then I followed the dimensions from the package of the premade stuff.  I cut two rectangles of each pattern in each dimension.  The depth is wider than the  width so 2 rectangles were 40 inches x 12 inches and 2 were 40 inches x 18 inches.

This size turned out to be way too big!  (That made me wonder how mad I would’ve been if I had paid for the precut stuff and the whole thing had to be readjusted!)

So we went to the school, where I proceeded to embarrass said daughter by hanging the wallpaper she so desperately wanted (kids, can’t win right?)

It turned out cute!  With the exception of having to fold some sides in to make them small enough to fit, it was relatively easy to install!  I brought a pair of scissors with me and was able to cut a hole for the lock section and poke holes for the coat hooks.

We chose to hang ours with the Loctite funtak adjustable blue strips so that it wouldn’t leave any trace on the locker.  I did it in a few spots down each side.  It seemed to work really well!

So there you have it!  Now you can make your own and decorate your tween’s locker!

Friendship Bracelet~ Easy DIY

Friendship bracelets are always fun.  Kids of all ages love getting them, and receiving them.  My 10 year old was so excited to share this tutorial.  She recently learned how to make these easy bracelets, and loves it.

You will need:

Yarn

Scissors

Cardboard (lightweight: cereal boxes, 12 pack soda boxes both work great)

To begin, you are going to cut your loom out of cardboard.  make a 3 inch circle, and then cut a small hole in the middle.  (a hole punch is the perfect size if you have one that will reach into the center of your circle).  Now cut 8 small lines around the outer edge of your loom.  They don’t have to be perfectly spaced, but you don’t want them all next to each other either.  Cut them like this:

Now cut 7 lengths of yarn.  Make them about 1 ft long.  Put your yarn together, put through the hole in the center of your loom, and then tie them together in a  knot on one end.

Once you have them in a knot, slide your knot so it is touching the loom and the strings are hanging on the other side.  Make sense?  Take each string and slide them into a slot on your loom like this:

friendship bracelet, #kidscraft, #yarn, #diy, #bracelet, #kids, #fun, #craft

You want the yarn to be in firmly, but don’t pull too tight and rip your loom.

You will have one empty slot in your loom.  Put it at the top, like the 12 on a clock.  Now count down 3 slots clockwise from that empty slot, grab that length of yarn, and slide it into the empty slot at 12 o’clock.

Once the string in slot 3 has been moved up to the empty slot, rotate your loom so that the new empty slot is at the top.  Repeat that step by counting 3 down and moving the string to the empty spot.  Continue doing so, while occasionally checking your hanging yarn lengths to make sure they are not tangled.  Also remember to keep it tight to get a neater looking bracelet.

Once you have created the bracelet the length you want, remove it from the loom.  Tie a knot in the end of the bracelet that you just removed from your loom. Measure a finger width from your new knot and knot again, leaving a space in between the knots.

Trim your ends and you are done.  To put the bracelet on, take the space between the 2 knots you just made and slip the knot at the other end in between these 2 knots.

There you go!  An easy activity your kid can do and feel the rewards of creating something unique and fun!
