After a checkup at the dentist when my daughter was 3 we decided it was time to give them up. It was messing up her teeth! (I could her "bite" wasn't lined up properly) So,we had a visit from the Paci Fairy! She left them in a pretty basket one night before bed, when she woke up the basket held a small stuffed bear and some stickers. She was happy and didn't fuss much at all that first night since she looked forward to the Fairy's visit.

Here's what we did with our two year old earlier this year. I told her that there was a binky fairy (the older kids thought this was hilarious!) and that this Binky Fairy could take her binkies and give her a big girl toy. I told her to decide what sort of big girl toy she wanted and tell it to the stars, and the Binkie Fairy would hear it (mommy too.) Then the binkie fairy would come and take her binkies while she was sleeping and give her her big girl toy. She said she wanted a barbie, so I went to Target, picked up a barbie on clearance, and viola! Every time she's asked for a "b-word" since we give her her barbie. I think it was easier since she was SO excited to be a big girl like her 2 big sisters.

when I was trying to get my son to lose the binky what I did was cut the tip of it off. He wanted nothing to do with it after that and never mentioned it. It was simple and painless for both of us.

We just went cod turkey with my daughter about 3 weeks ago. She is a little over 3 and only used the binkies at night, but my husband decided enough was enough and just threw them all in the trash. She had a melt down but went to sleep okay that night and every night since. So, it was worth the one meltdown!!

Hello,
Well I have a DAUGHTER that is now 19 she always had hers also, she had a little purse she would keep them in. So, long story short I went away for the weekend when she was 3 my inlaws took them away so they thought .. She always had a back up in the purse. And to this day she still has the little purse.... She packed it when she left for college, ( not sure she still uses them but always will have them ) ha ha

We're doing the same thing with our current youngest. I decided she can keep the pacies at nap time for now, since her little brother (due in 3 1/2 weeks) will probably have them and I won't feel like fighting her.

When my daughter was coming up on four and still loved her binkies I found all of the binkies sanitized them in the washer and then took her and the binkies to build a bear. She said good bye to each one and placed it in the bear and ended up with her binkie baby. She hated it the first night, but got over it quickly.

We did it gradually as well! We went down to the car, naps, and bedtime. Then, naps and bedtime. And then finally took it away. Only one night of crying (and not too bad) and it was no problem after that!

We took the slow approach as well. When my daughter turned one we gave her the pacifier only for naps and bedtime. At 1 1/2 I took it away and she only cried at the first bedtime. I was amazed b/c she was sooo attached to it! My pediatrician said to just throw them all away so I couldn't give in!

THe one thing that worked for us (after we had done th whole "binkey's are only for naps" thing) was bribery. She could have a new dollie if SHE decided to give up her binkey. Took a couple of weeks, but she saw a baby on TV that she really likes and walked over and threw the binkey in the trash herself! (And yes.. we went out immedately and bought a new dolly!)

I MUST tell you I look forward to these postings. My kids are older and not as fun now in this way. Also, it is just fun to follow the antics of other peoples kids and see the joy. Thank you for the giggles. :)

This worked for us. A speech therapist recommended sniping off a TINY hole in the tip - so that it's not really noticeable. Our two year old couldn't get the familiar suction and tried another - we had cut holes in all of them. She made a face and I told her "they got too old and don't work anymore" She threw them away on her own, and wasn't upset at us since we didn't take them away (she was also addicted).
