3D Salt Painting ~ Easy Crafts for Kids

3D Salt Painting ~ Easy Crafts for Kids

My 5 year old and I made some fun salt paintings today. Salt painting are fun because they stick up off the page and have bold vibrant colors. You can drop the colors onto the salt and watch it follow the path, such a fun way to make a pretty picture. PLUS they are budget friendly and FAST to make… two things that are important for me, that way I don’t feel bad when I toss this in the trash after it has been proudly displayed in our house for a few days.

kids craft projects, 3d Salt Painting, perfect for kids of all ages preschool up to teens, Low cost art and craft projects

To make these you will need

  • Cardboard or poster board (thick paper plates work well too)
  • Elmers school glue
  • Table salt
  • Food coloring (diluted with water)
  • Eye dropper
  • Little hands ready to make a project

Draw your image on the cardboard, make sure some of the lines overlap so the color has a path to follow. Cover with salt, tap off the extra salt and  set aside to dry. In small bowl drop a few drops of food color, then dilute it with water to thin down the color.  Use an eye dropper to suck up some color and drop it on the salt. Watch it follow the salt lines and make a beautiful picture.

If you do this on regular paper would the die bleed through and ruin it?

Fort Stevens was a military base at the mouth of the Columbia River. You can walk around and see the structures left behind and take a walking tour of the underground bunker. Another part of thr park has remains of a pirate ship on the beach.

  17. Heather Blau

That’s wonderful! I need to post this to my page so I don’t forget.

It’s kind of what we did in elementary school but I think we dyed the salt and just put it right on the glue.

  26. Mallory Nusbaum

My kids are to little but this is cool and it’ll be a plan in the near future

  27. Carissa Carlisle

Does it need to dry before you do the color? (Like the butterfly you set aside)

  28. Jennifer Booth

Try touching the 3 dots in top right and turn off seeing live reactions, this may help wi the cutting out (on mobile device)

  29. Marlena Hansen

Cutting out happens for me when a new comment posts. It’s a Facebook problem.

  30. Faith Mendez

If I’m thinking what you are doing, we did this same thing in elementary school. We did it with like aztec drawings or whatever. Like the ones you see on sides of mountains.

  31. Victoria Wester
