Bag of Rice Project #187 -A visit to the James family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the James family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Kristina Cassar this is the 187th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. The James family live in a two bedroom mud house that has no electricity or plumbing and they get water from a local stream or collect rainwater. Mr James has 3 kids but we did not meet the kids at home because they were all at their Grandma’s house.

The James family cook in a semi open kitchen and they use wood to cook. Mr James is sells sand at the river. So he goes with canoe and then dives to the bottom of the river and uses a bucket to scoop the sand into the canoe and he keeps doing this until the boat is full and he returns to the shore and then offloads the fine sand to sell to those who need the sand to build houses. This is hard work and sometimes he does not sell any sand for days. His wife stays at home to take care of the kids.

This family was very happy to see us and even happier when we told them whom we were and what we brought for their family. They were very grateful for the bag of Rice and to those who donated it for them. Mr James said that they did not have food and that was why they had to send the kids to live with their Grandma. This family has been having a hard time coping with this economy and this bag of Rice will go a long way in helping them face it.
