Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Nwachi family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Emily Long and Kathy Pettit this is the 255th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
Mr Lawrence Ibe Nwachi is a native of Afikpo, he is married with 3 children. We met him and his wife in this pitiable condition. He worked as an operator in a Lebanese company in Lokoja, North Central, Nigeria. He was involved in a motor accident while traveling back home to meet his family and sustained a spinal cord injury. Ever since then, a whole lot has changed in his family, ranging from finances to health.

His wife is a full-time house wife whose main job is taking care of her bedridden husband. They practically depend on alms for survival. She told us that they don’t have the money to undergo a spinal cord operation and have since resorted to fate. She cooks for the family with firewood, this is what they can afford from nearby bushes. At times and perhaps there is scarcity of firewood, they can borrow from neighbors.

I had more than a couple of people recommend this family to us. They have gone through a lot and I remember them being wealthy but this accident basically changed their lives. We were happy to meet and give them the bag of Rice. She was filled with joy and expressed gratitude to God for remembering them in such hard time like this.

You might notice in the photos the bag says flour. This village was far away from where we normally purchase the rice, We found a rice mill closer to their village that would sell us the rice in bulk. However we had to bring our own bags to fill. The bags we found were not rice bags they were flour sacks, but they fulfilled the purpose we needed. We were grateful to be able get this rice to this remote village, it was a difficult task and took some resourceful thinking to make it happen.
