Bag of Rice Project #452 -A visit to the Peter family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Peter family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Patricia Watkins this is the 452nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Peter family in Afaha village, Ibesikpo Asutan local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The family lives in a rented one bedroom apartment and they have 5 children. When we met them the male children were cooking in the backyard of the house and the female children said it was the turn of the male children to cook. Mr Benjamin Peter was not around when we visited, but we were given a warm reception by the wife and the children. When we told them what he brought for them they were happy and said that this is the first time they are receiving a free bag of rice from someone who doesn’t know them. They didn’t believe their eyes.

The Peter’s family cooks in an open space in their backyard, they make use of firewood for cooking which is the cheapest means of cooking they can afford as the economy of the country is not in a good state. Mr Benjamin Peter and praise Benjamin are both unemployed. They engage in menial jobs to provide for the family.

They prayed for the donor as they received a free bag of rice in these hard times and they were surprised that a bag of rice could be given to them freely without coming from a politician as a substitute for voting during an election. They were happy and continued praying for the donor. When we left the family their mood tells it all, they were so happy.
