Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Alfred family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tina Fruzen, and this is the 495th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Alfred family in Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The family resides in Effoi village. When we arrived at their compound they were all standing as they saw us drive in. Mr Alfred had visitors and they gave us a warm reception. Due to a shortage of cash, the family’s two children are not in school. The family lives in a mud house, and because of the poor state of the roof, when it rains, the interior floods. Also, the restroom is a public area, and they utilize a pit toilet for defecation. They said they bathe as early as 5 a.m. to keep onlookers from seeing their nakedness. They were so excited when we told them what we had brought for them that they started dancing around the compound.
The Alfred family cooks in the rear of their home; they built a shade to keep the kitchen from flooding when it rains. Since they cannot afford cooking gas, the family chose the cheapest fuel available, which is firewood; this practice is hazardous to the public’s health. Mr. Alfred is a merchant who works to support his family. When we inquired about his wife, he said that she passed away because he was unable to pay for her medical care.
The whole family was giddy with excitement, especially the kids. They said that it had been a while since they had rice. They asked for God’s blessing on the donor and prayed for the donor. When we left the family, they continued to pray and waved at us. They prayed that all the donor asked for would come to pass.
