Bag of Rice Project #515 -A visit to the Akwawo family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Akwawo family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Megan Wells, and this is the 515th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We were introduced to the Akwawo family by a friend. When we met them they were all seated outside, they were shocked by a vehicle parked inside their house because they were not expecting any visitors. The family resides in Effoi village, which is located in the Southern part of Nigeria. When we entered the compound they greeted us and offered us something to drink. When we told them what brought us to the family, they were excited and never believed such will ever happen. A bag of rice is worth more than the minimum wage in the country. The Akwawo family has six beautiful kids, in which all of them are out of school due to lack of money but the parents said they are planning to make them resume school once they are okay financially. The Akwawo family stays in a one-bedroom apartment and the house is not in good shape. The zinc of the house is leaking and anytime it rains, the whole of the house is affected by the rain.

The Akwawo family cooks at the back of their house, they make use of firewood because that’s the cheapest fuel they can afford. The price of cooking gas has skyrocketed and they are unable to afford one. The husband Mr. Emmanuel Akwawo is a palm wine tapper and the wife Mrs. Patience Akwawo is a farmer, they use this to fend for the family.

The Akwawo family was delighted to get a bag of rice and they were happy. They never believed someone who doesn’t know them will give them a bag of rice for free. They thanked the donor and prayed that God will bless the work of their hand and God will never disappoint them. The family were happy and they smiled and waved at us as we left.
