Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Thankgod family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Becky Wright, and this is the 533rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
In the southern part of the Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom, where we met the Thankgod family, was Ikot Ibritam village. The family was waiting for us outside of their home when we arrived. They offered us a warm welcome and were delighted to learn why we were visiting them. They exclaimed joyfully because they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. The family resides in a one-bedroom apartment that was constructed using blocks. The family is fortunate to have three lovely children.
Despite the health risks associated with using firewood to cook, the family is forced to use it since it is the cheapest fuel they can afford. They are unable to afford cooking gas because of the price at which it is sold in the market. Mr. Thankgod is a farmer, and his wife is unemployed, but she has shown interest in selling fish in the market, but she doesn’t have the funds to start yet. They don’t have access to clean water, they don’t have basic household facilities, and they urinate outdoors.
The kids grinned, and the family was content. They admitted to us that they hadn’t eaten rice in a while. They expressed their gratitude to the donor and asked for God’s blessing and assistance in their time of need. The family was joyful and grinned as we departed.
