Bag of Rice Project #535 -A visit to the Arit family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Arit family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Mariah Robins, this is the 535th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Arit family in Uyo village, which is domiciled in the southern part of Nigeria. The family was referred to us by a friend. When we got to the compound, it seemed as if no one was staying there; we had to knock, and when they came out, they were surprised to see us. They gave us a receptive welcome and wanted to know why we came to their compound. We told them why we were in their compound and that someone had donated a bag of rice for them. The old woman was shocked, shouting, “IN THIS NIGERIA’S ECONOMY.” She was so happy and surprised that such was happening to her; she said she only heard it happen, but it had not happened to her before that today she is experiencing it. The old woman told us she has 7 kids but at the moment, one of her sons is the one staying with her. The family lives in an uncompleted house that is built with blocks and is not yet plastered. The old woman said the roof of the house has been leaking anytime rain falls, the house is usually flooded, the last time she saw light was 5 years ago, and she has been unable to pay her light bills, which led to disconnection.

The Arit family cooks at the back of their house, and they make use of firewood for cooking, which is the cheapest fuel they can get. This method of cooking is considered dangerous to the body. Considering the age of the old woman, she should not be making use of firewood to cook because it is harmful to her health and not advisable as a good method for cooking. Mrs. Arit told us the husband died ten years ago. The old woman said she does not have anything she is doing at the moment; she is supported by her children to feed.

Mrs. Arit and her son were happy with the bag of rice the donor gave them. They prayed that God would bless the donor and provide for their needs anytime they called on God. The old woman and his son were excited, and they continued praying for us until we left.
