Bag of Rice Project #579 -A visit to the Uwem family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Uwem family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M”, and this is the 579th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Uwem family on the outskirts of Uyo. When we got to the house, we saw one of the children sleeping outside. When she saw us, she called the mother and she came out and gave us a receptive welcome. We told her someone donated a bag of rice to her and she did not know when she started shouting and the other children came out; they asked her what happened, and she screamed and said in their local dialect, “UKETE EKPA ERESI AMI?” meaning, can’t you people see these bag of rice? She told them that we said someone donated the bag of rice to them. The Uwem family lives in a one-room apartment that was rented for them and the rent has expired, and they are unable to renew the rent. The landlord has given them a deadline on when to pay and they pray they meet the deadline. They go to the stream to fetch their water, and it is not healthy for people to drink. The family is blessed with 5 children and one of them is severely sick and needs medical attention, but the family is unable to foot the hospital bills; she is treated traditionally, which is not the right form of treatment to give her.

Mrs Uwem cooks with firewood; she is unable to afford cooking gas. Cooking with firewood is not advisable because of the effect, but they are unable to afford cooking gas because it is expensive and the price of filling it has skyrocketed if they even get one. Mrs Uwem is a farmer and she does that to fend for the family.

After receiving the bag of rice, the family thanked the donor and prayed to God for blessings and assistance during their trying time. The family was overjoyed. As we departed, the family grinned and said a prayer for the donor and us.
