Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edet family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Melissa Rae, and this is the 581st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Edet family in Uyo when we got to the compound; we did not see anyone outside and we had to knock on their door. One of the children came out, and as he saw us, he shouted mummy, and the mother came out. She gave us a welcoming welcome and she said she had not seen our faces before in the community. We told her what brought us to the compound, and she shouted, and the daughter came out. She told the daughter that we said someone donated a bag of rice to them; the daughter was shocked and asked us if it was a prank. We told her it was not when we brought the bag of rice out; they were so happy and the mother said God has visited them, that they now have a meal. The family was so happy. The family lives in a mud house and it lacks the basic amenities. They go to the stream to fetch water, which is not good for drinking and some people go to the stream to wash their clothes; this makes the water bad for drinking. They defecate openly; they do not have a toilet, and they take their bath at the back of their house. The family is blessed with 2 kids and they are all out of school at the moment because there is no money to send them to school.
The Edet family cooks at the back of their house; they cook with firewood. They are unable to afford cooking gas because the price of gas has skyrocketed. Mrs Edet is unemployed at the moment and she would like to sell fish at the local market but she is unable to start the business. One of the children wants to learn tailoring but she is unable to enrol because there is no money to learn.
The family expressed their appreciation to the donor for providing them with a bag of rice worth more than the country’s minimum income. The giver thought that whatever they did would be worthy and that God would reward them. As we drove off, they grinned and waved.
