Bag of Rice Project #582 -A visit to the Nyong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Nyong family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 582nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Nyong family in Nung Udoe. When we got to the compound, we did not see anyone outside; we had to knock and when we did. Mrs. Nyong came out and she welcomed us. We told her that someone donated a bag of rice to her and we were there to deliver it to her. She was shocked and said she did not believe it when we brought the bag of rice out. She was so happy and said God had given her an unexpected gift. Mrs. Nyong lives in a mud house. She told us her grandparents owned the house and she inherited it from them. The house lacks the basic amenities a house should have. The roof of the house still leaks, and there is no toilet or bathroom in the house. She told us her children were not around and that they all went out, she told us she is blessed with 4 children and none of them were able to go to school because there was no money.

The family cooks with firewood, but they are unable to afford cooking gas because of the price. Mrs. Nyong is unemployed and she farms for people so that she could be able to fend for the family. She lost her husband and she has been farming for people to feed the family since the husband died.

Mrs. Nyong thanked the donor after getting the bag of rice and prayed to God to grant them blessings and support during their difficult time. She was delighted to receive a bag of rice. The family smiled and offered a prayer for us and the donor as we left.
