Bag of Rice Project #584 -A visit to the Utoh family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Utoh family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M”, and this is the 584th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Utoh family was recommended to us by a friend; he told us the condition of the family and we decided to visit. When we got to the compound, we did not see anyone outside, someone had to go inside to inform the person staying in the compound. Mr. Utoh is deaf and dumb, so someone had to explain to him the purpose of our visit with sign language; he was happy and was dancing outside the compound. Mr Utoh stays alone in the house, the parents and the siblings do not stay with him. The house lacks basic amenities; he sleeps on a foam that is infected with bedbugs and also he takes his bath outside and the house does not have electricity.

Mr Utoh cooks with firewood at the back of the house; he is unable to get cooking gas. He has no choice but to use firewood to cook, which is harmful to his health; he is unemployed and won’t be able to afford cooking gas. They told us sometimes he does not have what to eat, and the people in the community support him at times.

Mr. Utoh was happy we gave him a bag of rice; he was delighted, and the people around him thanked the donor for giving him a bag of rice. Everybody helps out to feed him in this village, and they were so grateful to see us render some help to him. They prayed for the donor and declared God’s blessings upon their life.
