Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Okon family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Sean Toombs and an anonymous donor, and this is the 592nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Okon family in Mbiaso village. When we got to the compound, it was as if no one was in, we had to knock the traditional way because the house does not have a door and we did by shouting in the local dialect “ anie owo Iba ke ufok” which means who is in the house, after about 2 mins someone came from the backyard and welcomed us and apologized for keeping us waiting because they were not expecting any visitors and were shocked when they heard voices in their compound. She offered us sit and we declined politely, we told her why we are in her compound that we have a bag of rice for her, the first question she asked us was if we were sent by politicians because it is strange for someone to give a bag of rice without asking for something in return, and politicians entice them with a few cups of rice so that they should sell their votes, and the people gladly do that because of the poverty in the land. We had to tell her we were not sent by any politician and that the bag of rice was donated to them by someone. She was surprised, and she shouted and was praising God in their local dialect, the children who were at the backyard rushed out because they heard their mother shout and wondered what it was, the mother broke the news to the children and they joined her in singing and they prayed for the donor. The family lives in a mud house, which is a one room apartment. This house reigned in the 18th century and it is not habitable in this century, but they are left with no choice than to live there because they do not money to build a house with block, also the house lacks basic amenities, there is no electricity and they go to the stream to fetch water. The family is blessed with four kids and at the time of our visit only two were around and they are out of school because there is no money to pay for their fees and the children are willing to acquire basic education, but they cannot because of the family condition. At the time of our visit the husband was not around, we were told he went to the farm.
The family cooks at the back of their house with firewood; that is what they can afford. They are unable to afford cooking gas because of the price in the market and they will be unable to fill the gas if they even have one. Using firewood to cook is harmful to their health because they are exposed to smoke and can cause lung cancer, but they are left with no choice but to cook with it. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Okon are farmers, and they said they usually sell to people before, they practiced commercial farming but the economy has crippled everything but they farm for family consumption now and it is not even enough for the family because of pests that eat up their crops, and they are unable to control it because of the price of chemicals in the market and also the price of fertilizer is up and they are unable to afford it and productivity has been very low.
The family prayed and thanked the donor. They thanked the donor for the heart of kindness shown by them, who gave generously to bless them with a bag of rice. They said God will provide for all their needs according to his riches in glory. Let their home never lack, and may their hands never grow weary in doing good. Increase them on every side—spiritually, financially, and emotionally. Multiply back to them far more than they have given, and let peace, joy, and divine favor follow them always. They continued praying as we drove out of their compound.
