Bag of Rice Project #596 -A visit to the Hill family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Udeme family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 596th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Hill family in Mbiaso village, the family was recommended to us by a friend. When we got to the compound, we did not see anyone outside the house, we had to knock the traditional way after a minute, Mrs. Hill came out and she gave us a receptive welcome and she offered us sit and we rejected politely, she asked us if we were looking for somebody. We told her we have something for her family, she was surprised, and she told us she doesn’t know us and how come we have something for her. We told her we were just driving by and decided to come to her family. We told her we have a bag of rice for her, and she was startled. She did not believe what we said until we brought out the bag of rice, she was so excited and surprised considering how pricey a bag of rice is. The next question she asked us was which politician sent us to give her family a bag of rice, we told her we were not sent by any politician, that someone donated it to their family, she was shocked someone can just dash a bag of rice to her without asking for anything back in return, she started singing and praying, her children came out and she told them the good news and they were so excited. The Hills family live in a one room apartment, the house is built with mud, they are unable to break the mud house and erect a proper structure because they do not have the money to do so. The house lacks basic amenities and it is on the verge of collapsing, there is no electricity in the house and the roof of the house leaks when rain falls especially in the night they would need to stand until the rain stops before they have a place to sleep. They practice open defecation, they don’t have access to a modern toilet, they take their bath outside, which they have to do as early as 5am. The family is blessed with 7kids and at the moment they are out of school because the parents are unable to afford fees for them.

The family cooks at the back in one of the rooms in their mud house, they built a mud house that serves as their kitchen, they cook with firewood which is harmful to the health and can cause problems to the lungs on a long run because of the level of smoke inhaled. They are unable to afford cooking gas because of how pricey it is, they are left with no choice than to fetch firewood from the bush so they could be able to cook. Mr Hill is a farmer, when we visited the family he was not around. we were told he went to the farm, Mrs Hills is unemployed at the moment, she said she has interest in learning hair dressing but she does not have the money yet to enroll in the training

The family were so excited and they prayed for the donor. She was so happy and prayed that God will continue to bless the donor and provide for them at all times. She continued praying for us as we drove away.
