Bag of Rice Project #597- A visit to the Eme family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Eme family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jadie Malott  , and this is the 597th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Eme family was recommended to us by a friend. When we got to the compound we found the children sitting outside, they greeted us and we told them we wanted to see their parents. One of the children went in to call the mother. When she came out she gave us a receptive welcome and offered us sit and we declined politely, she said she hasn’t seen this faces before and asked if we came to arrest her, we told her we have something for her family, she asked us what it was and we told her we have a bag of rice of her. She was surprised and said the price of rice is more than the minimum wage in the country. The children were happy as we brought out the bag of rice, she jumped up and started singing in their local dialect and the children joined her, she asked if we were working for politicians that we will just dash them a bag of rice, we told them someone donated a bag of rice to them, she was surprised that someone can give the family a bag of rice without asking for anything back in return, she started praying for the donor that they won’t lack. The family stays in a one room apartment and the house is built with mud, they lack the basic amenities. The roof of the house is leaking and whenever rain falls especially in the night they have to stand up because of the condition of the roof. They do not have a modern toilet facility, because they practice open defecation because they are unable to construct a modern toilet, they bathe outside and they do this as early as 5am. The family is blessed with 5 kids and only two of them are in school. The parents are unable to afford fees for the other three but they said they will try and make the others go when they start making money.

The family cooks at the back of their house, they make use of firewood as a source of fuel, they use that to cook. The use of firewood to cook is harmful to the health and it affects the human internal organ on a long run and can cause death. They are unable to afford cooking gas because of how pricey gas is. They told us even if they get a cooking gas they won’t be able to fill it when the gas finishes. Mr. Eme is a palm fruit harvester and he uses that to fend for the family, when we visited he was not home. Mrs. Eme is unemployed at the moment and she wants to sell fish at the market, but she does not have money to start the market.

The family was so happy and they prayed for the donor, giving them a bag of rice in their time of need. They prayed God will continue to bless the donor and God will show up whenever they need help. They smiled and waved at us as we left their compound.
