Extreme Couponing – ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE?

Extreme Couponing – ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE?

Many people wonder If what it means when it says One Coupon Per Purchase. And how can I use two coupons per purchase?

Question from my inbox this week,

First I want to thank you for your thriftymom website.  I’ve been
couponing for a year now and I still have questions.  I learn
something new everyday about coupons….I do have a question after
watching TLC’s Extreme Couponing, in the show the couponers bought a
large number of items and used coupons for every item…… I’ve read
the fine print on the coupon and most of these coupons have written on
them “one per purchase” or “one per purchase of like item”……..I’ve
tried to use multiple coupons, for instance, Act Popcorn at Winco and
the cashier refused my coupons because they read, one per
purchase……on the show there were items the couponers purchased and
i have the same coupons and mine read “one per purchase”.  So does
this depend on the store and cashier to take these multiple coupons?
does it also depend on the store and cashier to double a coupon that
reads “do not double”.  I hope you can explain this to me.

Answer: This is a great question and asked at every coupon class I teach, so I thought it would be a good topic to cover.  First let me say the fine print on a coupon should be read and honored.   A store has the right to refuse a coupon  ( which is silly they get reimbursed the full amount plus 8 cents).  That being said this is what the fine print means…

One Coupon per Purchase
One Coupon Per Purchase

If your coupon says ” One coupon per purchase”

That means you are only able to use one coupon per item purchased.  ( NOT buy 5 items and scan the same coupon 5 times).  If you are buying or purchasing 5 items you can then use 5 coupons.  Ask yourself or the cashier how many items did I purchase….5, so that means you can use 5 coupons  (One per purchase). You can have multiple ”purchases” within one transaction.

If the coupon was to say  “One coupon per transaction” then yes you are only to use one coupon for one item on that shopping trip.

If the coupon was to say ” One coupon per House Hold” then you are only use one coupon , not even on a new transaction or next shopping trip.

Can I Use Two Coupons on One Item
Can I Use Two Coupons on One Item

Many of you may have noticed P&G changed the wording on there coupons.  They now reads ” Limit one coupon per purchase, Limit of 4 like coupon in the same shopping trip” The top line means the same as above, one coupon per item or purchase ( you can buy 3 of the same items and use 3 coupons)…. but then the next line gives you even further instruction.  Only 4 like items in the same shopping trip.  So you can buy as many P&G products as you want in one transaction….but limited to 4 of each product. So 4 toothpaste, 4 shampoo, 4 bodywash…you get the idea.

The main thing is to remember a transaction is different than a purchase.  A transaction is the sum of all the items or all the purchases you made.

So Yes you can use two coupons per purchase.

If the store is having a sale (like Safeway) Buy 5 cans of soup/ for $4, can I use a coupon (buy 1 can of soup and get $0.75 off) for just one of those cans of soup? Also can I use 4 coupons for 4 of those cans?

    5/$4 = $1.25 ea
    4 coupons for $0.75 off = 4 cans at $0.50 and 1 can at $1.25?

My next question is if the store sale is 5/$4 so $1.25 ea, can I buy only 4, and then use the 4 coupons?

  2. bd01234 She doesn’t know the rules of the game; obviously. You were correct in trying to use them.

  3. similush No, if an item is on sale for 3.99 and you have 4 coupons, you can buy 4 of the items and the final price would be 11.96. (3.99×4=15.96 and then 15.96-4)
Only one coupon can be used on one item.

  4. sammiecakez863 No, if you only have 1 coupon – you can only use that coupon once.

  5. I am also new to this couponing kick and wanted to know does the digital coupons take automatically for several like items or just on the first item?

  6. sammiecakez863

Question, i am new at this, and would like to know, if i have one coupon let’s say 1$ off and i buy 4 items will it take 1$ off each? Thanks

  7. N o, you can’t scan coupons (fraud),Some stores won’t except coupons that don’t scan at register especially with same code on coupon.
There is product code and coupon code..
you can  print the limit on coupon from online.
With an AB switch from computers to printer, you can print from each computer. I have three computers.

  8. So I have a question about couponing. I’ve tried to coupon by word by mouth. And they told me I use 4 like coupons on the same item. I’m just wondering if I buy an item thats on sale for $3.99 and I have 4 coupons for $1 off so can I use the 4 coupons on that 1 item so it’s free when checkout. So I’m confused with this couponing How can I find out to coupon the right way and save money at the same time, I enjoy doing this and I love the out come. Please help

  9. Walmart just refused two coupons which were for from coupons.com for Safe 55c when you buy any One (1) Sargento Sliced Natural Cheese. Both beeped and she said I couldn’t use more than one coupon per purchase. I then said, yes I know, but I have one coupon per ITEM PURCHASED in the transaction. She then re-stated “per perchase, per transaction” like they meant the same thing. I’ll be calling Walmart to discuss this.

  10. When they had Hefty zip lock bags 99 cents at Fry’s I had 30 coupons 35 cents to 50 cents off per each. So I made several purchases at Fry’s locations because of coupon limits. I ended up with a lot of Hefty storage bags, which I use to freeze vegetable and fruit I get at the Mobile Food Banks. I needed to economize and use other sources.I look at my Sunday paper I get delivered and decide if I need extra Sunday Newspapers dependent coupons in the paper.
I get my Sunday extra newspapers at 99 cent store and or Green-tree for 99 cents. I need several coupons in the Sunday paper to justify paying 99 cents additional for each paper.

  11. I use a photo album that I got from Goodwill for coupons as it has bigger slots for coupons and you can have coupons on the back of page. Coupons at a glance.

  12. I have three computers with a A/B switch to my printer and three times the amount of coupons. I don’t care for limits on coupons.

  13. Jacher Lopez

I guess my overall question was since I can’t scan the same coupon 10 times on one item. Can I scan 10 coupons for one item

  14. Jacher Lopez

Oh & I also see on the show how they get a lot of items free with the same coupons. That also confused me

  15. Jacher Lopez

Ive just barely started doing this. And it’s very satisfying! I had the same question as the one asked above but I am still a little confused. I got the part where I can use 2 coupons per item. But I had a question that I can’t seem to find the answer to. Let’s say I have 10 coupons for the same item. ’50¢ off ANY (1) Pillsbury biscuits’ if I have 10 That’s a $5 saving. If biscuits are a little over $3 can I use those 10 coupons on one can and so forth and so on (although I won’t need all 10) I have multiple coupons and they don’t sAy “limit one per purchase” and it’s really confused me. Please help(:

  16. Cacrocks Using 2 different coupons on ONE purchase is called stacking, UNLESS one is a Manufacturer coupon and the other is a Store coupon…FYI, Stacking is ILLEGAL in the US and Canada under the Fraud laws…

    1. correct.. one coupon must be a manufacture coupon.. and the other must be a store coupon, like it has a walmart logo on it or Albertsons logo, or the grocery store involved… then you can combine the manufacture coupon like Kelloggs and one from Walmart together… that is legal.. but not 2 manufacture coupons on the exact same one product..

  17. Cacrocks Using 2 different coupons on ONE product is called stacking…FYI in the US and Canada, it’s ILLEGAL under the Fraud laws…

  18. JenE4 No, you can either buy 1, 2 or 3 items and use the coupons accordingly to the amount of items you’ve purchased.

  19. abear100 If you buy 1 item, you can use 1 coupon. 4 coupons per household means you can use 4 coupons for 4 items and that is the limit.

  20. jen jen One coupon per transaction means you can only use that coupon ONCE with your entire order (1 transaction = 1 entire order). You could always come back with another coupon for a separate transaction.

  21. s3jriggs Since they used the word “any” I’d assume you could use it on the 4 pack. Typically, if a coupon is geared towards selling a specific product, they’ll be very specific in their wording on the coupon. The word “any” usually means you can get any product with that specific name on it. 🙂

  22. couponcoop No, you’d have to use one or the other. You cannot use 2 manufacturer coupons on one product.

  23. dlr25 Each store has a policy on the doubling of coupons… You’d have to check with the store. Most stores will double coupons up to a dollar. For example, if you have a .99 cent coupon, some stores will give you 1.98 off the product. You’d need to check with the stores.

  24. dlr25 You would need to purchase 2 jars of fruit to use that coupon…. that’s actually a good coupon… if you take it to a store that doubles, you can potentially get 1.50 off of 2 jars.

  25. stephmarie88 You would need to purchase 3 Pampers Swaddlers for the deal. You can only use ONE coupon per purchase. 1 item is considered 1 purchase. If you’re looking to “stack” coupons, you’d need to go to a store like Target or Walgreens where they have “store” coupons. You can stack a store coupon and a manufactureer coupon. For example… You have a 1.50 off Pampers coupon (FROM Pampers – this is a manufacturer coupons) and then you have 1.50 off Target Coupon FOR Pamers (Target is the one who is offering the coupon) – you would then have 3.00 off that product. This is the ONLY instance where you could use more than one coupon for 1 product.

  26. Cacrocks I’ve been couponing for years and YOUR are incorrect. The person who answered the OP is actually correct.

  27. I have a coupon that says save 75 cents on ant 2 dole jarred fruit. Does it mean 75 cents will be taken off of the regular price for 2 or 75 cents on each jarred fruit??

  28. If I have two coupons, one is save fifty cents on shout color catcher, and the other is save seventy five cents on any two shout products, and both coupons say “Limit one coupon per purchase” could i buy two shout color catchers and use a save fifty cent coupon for both, and combine it with the save seventy five cents on any two shout products?

  29. MattKneeland

elainecl Most stores have specific coupon policies. typically you are allowed one MANUFACTURER coupon and one STORE coupon per item. Again, this varies according to store policy, but for instance, say you wish to buy a single tube of toothpaste. You have 2 coupons that state manufacturer, and you have an eCoupon loaded onto a loyalty card (Acme, Wegmans, Stop and Shop what have you). You can combine ONE of the manufacturer coupons and the eCoupon on the same item. You cannot use both manufacturer coupons on one item, regardless of face value. Now some stores will double MANUFACTURER coupons up to a certain amount (some double face value to $1.00 maximum value, some will full double up to 99 cents, meaning $1.98 total value, again, read your store’s specific coupon policy). So, If the tube of toothpaste costs $2.49, and your MANUFACTURER’s coupon is for 75 cents off of one, and your eCoupon is for 50 cents off of one, your total out-of-pocket would be 49 cents if your store fully doubles (75 cent doubled to $1.50 and 50 cents for eCoupon for a total of $2.00 off), 99 cents if your store doubles to $1.00 maximum ($1.00 manufacturer’s and 50 cents eCoupon) or $1.49 if your store does not double coupons.

Another limitation is imposed by both stores and manufacturers. They typically limit coupon redemptions to 4 like coupons a transaction or per DAY. My local Acme will fully double coupons up to 99 cents face value, but will only accept 4 like coupons per day. Meanwhile, my local Shoprite will only double coupons to $1.00 max value, but do not have a limitation of like coupons. Many Proctor and Gamble coupons DO have that limitation right on the coupon, and the scan systems will know what coupon limitations there are. It’s rare that I’ve had coupons rejected (its usually because a certain flavor or product wasn’t linked properly to the coupon’s list of accepted UPC bar codes. Stay calm. If they refuse to honor the coupon after calling their attention to the specific wording (Any size, Any flavor, or 11 Oz or larger) and you have proven the product to be faithful to the coupon, do not get upset or angry. They as retailers DO have the right to refuse a coupon for any reason. It’s not in their best interest to since they do get reimbursed plus a handling fee, and they usually only do it if they feel there might be fraud involved. By staying calm and working with the cashier to come to a resolution you will have much greater success. Of course, be considerate and if you use a lot of coupons, go when it’s less busy and you do not incur the wrath of shoppers behind you in line, or the stressed out cashier.

    tl;dr
Only ONE manufacturer’s coupon per item, regardless of differing face value or expiration dates. To use all 3 coupons, Stephmarie88, you would need to purchase 3 products.

  30. I have a question. I have coupons for $1 off the purchase of any two Hormel Canned chicken. If I buy the 4-pack, can I use two of these coupons? The coupon does not specify.

  31. Please do not listen to this person. The facts she is giving you are wrong. The limit 4 per shopping trip, for example, does not mean you can only purchase 4 of that item that shopping trip. It means you can only use up to 4 of the same coupon during that trip. So if you wanted to buy 6 things of toothpaste, you could only use up to 4 of the same coupon, meaning only 4 things of toothpaste would be discounted by coupons. The last 2 things of toothpaste would have to be paid in full or you would have to use a different toothpaste coupon than what you have already used. Another wrong fact is the limit one coupon per purchase. This does not mean only one coupon can be applied to that item. It means only one of the same coupon can be applied to that item. For instance, if I had 2 of the same coupon, for lets say $1 off cheese, and 1 more different coupon that was $0.50 off cheese, I could use both types of coupons, but i could only use 1 of the $1 off ones. Coupons from one place can’t dictate what you do with your other different coupons. They can only dictate what you do with other coupons that are the same coupon.

  32. It looks like stephmarie88 is asking the same question.  could someone address this?

  33. I still don’t understand how people use 2 or 3 coupons for the same item.  Say something costs $3 and you have 3 coupons.  two for $1, one for .$.50…  will that $2.50 come off this one $3 item?  Costing me $.50 for this one item?  It seems to me that whenever I try to use a coupon, they will only let me put one coupon toward each item?

  34. stephmarie88

Question.. If i have 3 manufacturers coupons with different bar codes and expire dates for same product can i use them all on the same item? so Pampers swaddles i have 1.50 off and have 3 of them and there different bar codes and expire dates..?

  35. I have a quick question my P&Gbrand Saver says limit one coupon per purchase of products and quantities stated. LIMIT OF 4 COUPONS PER HOUSEHOLD. Does that mean If I buy one item can I use up to 4 of the same coupons for the purchase?

  36. christirobb

I have a coupon for a major store chain for 30% off entire purchase.  It does not have ANY limits on it except for certain brands.  Does this mean I can buy the whole store if I have enough coupons?

  37. sarahcuseo843

Yes you can use a store and manufacturer, like cvs for example, I had 2 $3 off coupons and 2 $2.50 manufacturer coupons for huggies little movers diapers and I used them all which made for a great deal bc they were on sale for $9.49/ea with my cvs extra card. I paid $8 and some change total for both

  38. I’m confused. I have the $2/1 Huggies Little Movers (1) Any package. Can I buy the box of Little Mover and use the coupon or does it has to be the small package?

  39. Hi, I am new to this couponing business. So I have this coupon for cake mix. It says “coupon cannot be stacked.” But it also says “limit 4”. Does this mean that I can buy 4 cake mixes, each at the price this coupon lists and just use the one coupon?

  40. Angie Stevens

Hello, I am totally new to the whole extreme couponing experience. I am SOOOO confused. I keep reading and reading different people’s websites and I still cannot figure out how the people on “Extreme Couponing” actually did what they did. I basically get some of it, except no one has answered my question…HOW do I use more than one coupon on the same item. I am not seeing any in-store coupons, no catalinas in my area, etc. Can I use a printable coupon and a manufacturer coupon on the same item??? If not, then how do people save so much?

    1. welcome – you can use a “store coupon” and a printable coupon OR a manufacturer coupon on ONE item… thats why store matchups are so important——-the “show” is a tv show for entertainment… when those registers beep and the manager overrides it.. those are not real coupons.. it used to be (one or two episodes) some what real.. but now its sooooo rigged its not even real anymore..

  41. I have a variety of coupons I’ve saved. I’ve got categories like ‘body wash’, ‘hair care’, ‘face’, etc. I intend to make one transaction but I get confused at the ‘limit one coupon per purchase’. I understand the offers on the coupons, but would I be able to use them all in one transaction (unless the store I go to has a limit of how many coupons I’m able to use in on shopping trip)? For example, I’ve got Suave and Olay products and (like I said) want to use a coupon for each in one transaction, will I be able to use both? Or one of them and come to the dreadful decision of one or the other?

  42. hey i was wondering if you can scan the 2 coupons of the same in the cash regester ?

  43. I have a question. If it says you can use 1 coupon from the store and 1 manufactured coupon for the same item does that mean i can buy 1 baby diaper and use the store $2 off and 1 manufactured coupon for $1 off for the same item then get $3 off on that baby diaper?

  44. I have a save $3.00 on 3 and a save $1.50 on 2 and a save $.40 on 1 coupon for the same product.  Can I use all 3 coupons at the same time on the 3 items??

  45. They need to be trained on coupon verbiage. This happened to me today I had two packs of baby wipes & two coupons. They wanted me to ring them seperately. I called the CSM he agreed, called the manager she was cool, explained to the CSM purchase means item. He screamed at me “Ok, you’re right and I am stupid”. I just walked out. I will only go there if my coupon gives me overage. I am done with them.

  46. About 2 weeks ago I was at Target and the cashier AND her manager refused to listen to me when I told her exactly what you said above. I read the fine print from the coupon and the store policy going in to shop and I knew that I was right but both her and her manager forced me to make separate transactions which ruined my savings. What would you have done?

    1. Sierra that’s exactly what happened to me at Walmart on Sunday…I had enough so I posted the video on youtube for all to see, how walmart is treating their customers.  I would have had overage from each of the coupons but they made sure I don’t use the coupon either.  my video is on youtube: search “walmart employee thinks “limit one coupon per purchase” means “limit one coupon per transaction”.

  47. What if you have a coupon that does not state any limits? (Eg. “one coupon per purchase” or “Limit 3 items”) Can you use one coupon for multiple purchases of the same item?

  48. Sorry to contradict you but in the target policy there is nothing that says that a (one per purchase coupon) will be  automatically used as a (one per transaction coupon). Thats what a policy is for to be fallowed. I’ve worked in a retail food store my self and im just happy you mentioned this so i can go over the stores I shop at polices again, and I’m happy to say that the target policy doesnt mention they use all coupons like that. But thanks for the insite.
