How to Make Ice Cream In A Bag

Ziploc challenged my family to see how we could survive spending NO money for a weekend. Can Your Family Survive a No-Spend Weekend? We never shop on Sundays so that was pretty easy, we just went to church and did a family dinner like normal. Saturday the weather was nice so the kids wanted to play outside, it was one of the first sunny days we’ve had this spring. The kids laid in the hammock, played tag, dug in the mud for worms and had a great time enjoying the sunshine.

We spread a blanket out on the grass and had a snack. The kids wanted to pack a picnic lunch even though we were right in our own backyard. The girls made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with lots of extra jelly and put them in Ziploc Bags, and the boys put bbq chips and gold fish crackers in snack bags. They put it all in a backpack and marched outside like they were heading up a mountain side… only to stop in the middle of the yard and enjoy their hard work.

We often go out for ice cream on Saturday nights.  But since this was a No-Spend Weekend, we made our own ice cream. We made ice cream in a bag, I learned to make it when I was a little girl in my Blue Bird Troop, it was part of earning our cooking badge. It is a fun way to make a tasty treat!

How to Make Ice Cream In A Bag

You will need (makes 5, 1/2 cup servings):

  • 2 cups heaving whipping cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • Fruit to flavor your ice cream(optional)
  • 8 cups of ice
  • 5 tablespoons of salt
  • Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bag
  • 10 Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bag or Ziploc® Brand Freezer Bag

How to make ice cream in a bag, Quick and easy recipe for the kids to make tis summer #Ziploc, #IceCreamInABag, #recipe Put the heavy whipping cream, whole milk, sugar, and vanilla into a bowl and mix well till the sugar is dissolved.  Pour 1/2 cup of the ice cream mixture into each small snack bag.  Squeeze out any extra air, zip them shut. Place the snack bag inside a sandwich bag, zip closed and take out any air in the bag.  The double bag will help keep the salt water out of your ice cream. You can add fruit if you want, but it seems to set up better without the fruit. We made one with strawberries and one with black berries, the other 3 were just plain vanilla.

It is best to do this outside, as the ice starts to melt and makes a bit of a mess. It is a good idea to have a little extra ice on hand too. On a hot day the ice will melt much faster, you need to have lots of ice in order for the ice cream to freeze.

Take the snack bag out, wash it off to get rid of any salt water that might be on the bag. You can eat it as is, or put in the freezer for another hour or 2 to help it thicken up even more.

The title says adults, but this can be for any age group, my kids love these… but then again my kids are “weird” and eat lots of things other kids won’t. When put together these just turn out really classy and work well for an adult party or social gathering. The reason I plant a garden each year, is to harvest the tomatoes everyday…. so this recipe is one of my favorite snacks :). I also love to buy the FRESH mozzarella cheese balls from the specialty cheese section they make this recipe even BETTER! If you are in a rush this recipe can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator for a few hours before you are ready to serve them.

Ingredients
Grape or Cherry Tomatoes
Mozzarella Cheese
Fresh Basil Leaves
Olive Oil
Salt
Pepper
Toothpicks

Cut the tomatoes in half top to bottom and skewer with a tooth pick also top to bottom. But the Mozzarella into cubes about the same size as the tomato halves and skewer with the toothpick below the tomato. Secure a basil leaf to the tooth pick at the top and bottom wrapping around the tomato and mozzarella. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature.

Cosmic Brownies Copy Cat Recipe

Moist chocolate fudgy brownies, with bright colored m&m’s on top… does it get any better than that? It sure does, when you have a WHOLE pan of them in your kitchen. Ingredients

  • 1 ½ Sticks Butter, softened
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • ¾ Cup Heavy Cream
  • 2 teas. Vanilla Extract
  • ¾ Cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 8 oz. Semisweet Chocolate
  • ¼ – ½ Cup Mini M&Ms

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. In a mixing bowl cream together the Butter, Sugar and Brown sugar. Add in the Eggs, ¼ Cup Heavy cream and Vanilla, stir until combined. Add in the Cocoa powder and stir until combined. Add the flour 1/3 at a time stirring between each addition. Put the batter in an 8×8 or 9×9 inch pan lined with lightly greased parchment paper and bake at 350 degrees until a tooth pick comes out clean, 45-55 minutes. Remove and let cool.

In a microwaveable bowl combine the Chocolate and ½ Cup Heavy cream. Microwave on high for 30 second intervals stirring after each until the Chocolate is melted and smooth. Pour over the brownie in the pan and smooth to the edges. Sprinkle with M&Ms and refrigerate until set. Remove from the pan and cut into desired sizes. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I happen to be a BIG FAN of Buffalo Chicken, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. But it can be a little messy to eat as a finger food.  These Buffalo Chicken Slider satisfy your craving and make it an easy finger food for any party.  These could be perfect game day food!

Ingredients
½ Cup Blue Cheese Dressing (or ranch if you are not a fan of blue cheese)
½ Cup Sour Cream
6 Tbsp. Butter
½ Cup Louisiana Hot Sauce
3 Chicken Breasts, cooked and shredded*
1 Pkg. Kings Hawaiian Savory Butter Rolls
2 Celery Ribs, sliced wafer thin

Instructions

In a small bowl combine the Blue cheese dressing and Sour cream, set aside. In a pan over medium heat melt the Butter and whisk in the Hot sauce. ** Add the Chicken and stir to coat. Once it starts simmering/sizzling let cook for 5-7 minutes to warm through, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cover Warm the rolls either in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or in the oven at 300? for 4-6 minutes. Remove the desired number of rolls and cut open, place a heaping teaspoonful of chicken on the bottom half of each roll, spoon some of the dressing over the chicken, top with thinly sliced celery. *You can cook these any way you like. I put them in a nonstick pan with a ¼ cup of water, covered and cooked over medium heat, turning every so often until 170?, then shredded with two forks.

** You can adjust the amount of hot sauce depending on the amount of heat you like. This makes about a medium heat level.
