A Thrifty Dads thought – Change in television

It’s Matt – Sarah’s hubby. It has been awhile since I typed out my thoughts. But this has been on my mind:

Remember watching TV when you were young and some one would say a word that shocked you?

Work Out

Now a days we think nothing about it. Remember those work out shows where the ladies would wear tights and a unitard that covered every square inch. At that time we thought how could some one wear something so revealing?

Naked Mole Rat on commercial

Just this past week the PTC (Parent Television Council) put out a report showing that on television:

  • “use of the bleeped or muted f-word increased from 11 instances in 2005 …
  • ..to 276 instances in 2010 – an increase of 2,409%”
  • In the season of 2011 to 2012 there were 76 times a scene showed full nudity of any kind – front or back.
  • Compared to 2010 there were only 15 times full nudity was shown.
  • An increase of 407%
  • During the 2010 to 2011 season there was only one instance of Full Frontal Nudity.
  • Then in 2011 to 2012 there were 64 scenes of Full Frontal Nudity. That is a 6,400% increase.

These numbers are not of cable shows like Showtime or HBO. This is normal free television like CBS, NBC, ABC! Where have we come in only a year, yet many have not even noticed the increase. Why is that? Are we numb to TV now? Have we seen so much that we enjoy those shows now. Why do the major networks do this? Is it a marketing catch, a forced change? Why do we allow this? There has been report after report that this desensitising leads to more and more of not only this but so much more.
