Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Jonah family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M” , and this is the 576th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Jonah family in Nung Udoe; a friend recommended the family. When we got to the compound, we did not see anyone outside so we had to knock on the door. Mrs. Jonah came out and she welcomed us. She offered us water and we declined politely. We had to tell her why we were there, and when we told her, she was surprised and did not believe her eyes. She thought we were playing a prank on her; she believed it when we brought out the bag of rice and she shouted around the compound and she was very happy. She never believed someone can donate a bag of rice to her without asking for anything in return; she admitted that it has not happened before and that even when politicians distribute rice, they share a bag among a whole lot of family. She believed we were God-sent because there was no food in the house for them to cook and it has been really hard for them. The Jonah family live in a one-room apartment and also practices open defecation and takes their bath outside; they are unable to pay their electricity bill and they haven’t had light in their house for years. The family is blessed with 3 kids and at the time the children have dropped out of school because they are unable to afford the basics for the children in school.
The Jonah family are unable to afford cooking gas and they have to depend on firewood to cook, which is harmful to their health. They cook at the back of their house and whenever it rains, they have no choice but to wait for the rain to stop before they start cooking. When we asked Mrs Jonah about the husband; he told us the husband is crippled and does not work because of his condition and it has been hard for her to fend for the family. She is unemployed but she does menial jobs to feed the family. She told us she would like to sell fish at the local market but the money to get it is a problem.
The fact that a stranger could give them a bag of rice without even knowing their name made the Jonah family happy. They prayed that God would always be there for them and always see to their needs as they had blessed them. The family appeared happy and enthusiastic as we drove away.
