Bag of Rice Project #577 -A visit to the Udoh family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Udoh family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M”, and this is the 577th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Udoh family in Nung Udoe; we were driving by and we saw the house and intended to visit them. When we got to the house, we did not see anyone outside; we had to call them out the traditional way by saying “WHO DEY HERE” . The reason we did that was because the house does not have a door. As we called them the traditional way, Mrs. Jonah came out; she had to tell us not to be angry because she was at the backyard. She offered us sit and we declined politely; we told her our purpose of visiting her and she was so happy, she spoke in the local dialect, saying “ ABASI ANAM AMI” meaning God did this. She was happy as we brought out the rice and said in their local dialect, “ABA NTE NDAP” which means it is like a dream; she told us she never believed someone could give her a bag of rice without asking for anything in return. The Udoh lives in a mud house, which was a currency in the 1900s; the house is outdated right now and also told us when rain falls, the roof leaks. The house lacks the basic amenities, they go to the stream to fetch water and the water are not clean enough because some people defecate in the water. Also, they have pit latrine, which they use in defecating, which is not healthy. There has been no form of electricity in the house since it was built. The Udoh family is blessed with 4 kids and because of how the economy is with family, they are unable to send any of the children to school.

The Udoh family cooks with firewood and they are unable to afford a cooking gas. The use of firewood to cook is harmful to the health and it is not advisable to cook with it, but they are left with no choice but to cook with it. Mr. Udoh is unemployed at the moment; he was a security guard in the secondary school but when thieves came to rob the school and left with the school properties, he was sacked. The wife, Mrs. Rose, sells in the local market and she has been doing that to fend for the family.

The Udoh family was thrilled to receive the bag of rice from the benefactor. Whenever they prayed to God, they asked Him to bless the giver and meet their needs. On our way out, the family prayed for us. They were grateful that God had come to them and that they had received rice.
