Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Samuel family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jodi Slater, and this is the 606th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Samuel family in Mbiaso village. The Samuel family lives close to the Akpan’s, when we got to the compound we did not find anyone outside, so we had to knock on their door the traditional way because the house does not have a door. We had to shout “Owo mi”in their local dialect which means, is there anybody here. When they heard our voice they came out and gave us a receptive welcome. Mr. Samuel asked us what brought us to his compound and we told him we have a bag of rice for his family, he did not believe his eyes, he said a bag of rice was more than the minimum wage in the country currently. He was so excited and started asking us which political party sent us that he is ready to campaign for the person, we told him we were not sent by a political party that someone donated the bag of rice to his family and he was so happy. The Samuel family lives in an uncompleted building which is built with blocks, the house lacks a roof and when rain falls they have to stay outside until the rain stops. The family is blessed with four kids and they have stopped schooling because the family does not have enough money to train them in school.
The Samuel family do not have a proper kitchen, they cook outside their house. The family makes use of firewood to cook. The dangers cooking with firewood pose to the vital organs of the body is enormous. It is not advisable to use firewood to cook, but the family is left with no choice than to make use of firewood for cooking because they are unable to afford a cooking gas, fetching firewood from the forest does not cost any money and they embrace that because they are unable to get a cooking gas. Mr. Samuel does coconut business, he uses this to fend for the family. He told us that his wife is currently not working nor has a business currently, they are unable to raise money to start a business for the wife.
Mr. Samuel was so happy and he thanked the donor for helping him out. He prayed God will bless the donor and also protect them, he also said God would remember the donor in their times of their need. The continued praying as we left.
