Please, Thank You, and I’m Sorry

My Grandmother gave me very thrifty advice recently before she died from cancer that I feel I need to share. She lived on $500 social security a month & had no savings. She decided she should look into alternative burials since she didn’t want to burden her kids with thousands of dollars to bury her so she asked me to help her look into it. In the process I found out about thrifty burials. The mark ups from funeral homes are unreal!! We found a local couple who made caskets, & she picked out a really nice pine box that was more beautiful & priced better than any at the funeral homes; we found out about the consumers funeral alliance who keeps info on reputable funeral homes & helps you compare & find the best prices. We discovered so much more valuable information. Also the experience & extra time spent with her in her finals days was such a blessing. When my uncle died a few months later I was able to help my mom with the scary & emotional process of finding a trustworthy place & affordable burial for him. My grandmother did it all & reused everything to save pennies but learning about end of life planning was something I had never even thought of until we were faced with this last year. There is a thrifty & reasonable, respectful way to save money with burials & all it takes is a little time, planning & research.
