Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Utah family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Julie Moncur, and this is the 568th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Utah family in Uyo village, which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State, the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the compound, we did not see anyone outside, we had to knock and they came out. They gave us a receptive welcome. She offered us a seat and enquired if we needed water, which we politely declined. She asked us the purpose of the visit and we told her. She was telling us to repeat ourselves severally when we told her we brought a bag of rice to her that was donated by someone. She did not believe her ears, because it sounded like a lie to her. She told us even though the new minimum wage set by the government cannot buy a bag of rice; she was excited and screamed for joy. in her local dialect, she said, “ ABASI EBEKPA ADI NSE” meaning God of the widow has visited me. Mrs Utah has only 1 child; she told us she did not have only one child before, but cancer has killed more than 10 of her kids, so she has only one left now. She lives in a one-room apartment, and the house lacks the basic amenities; they don’t have a bathroom, so they have to take their bath as early as 5 am so that people will not see them. Also, the toilet they have is a pit latrine.
Mrs. Utah told us she does not have cooking gas and showed us where she cooks; she cooks with firewood. Firewood is harmful to the health, but she has no other option than to use it because of the cost of gas; also, refilling a gas now costs a lot, and she said she won’t be able to get cooking gas. Mrs Utah is a widow, and she sells fish in Udua Uyo, which is a local market, to take care of her child and feed the family, she wishes she could expand to other locations, but she does not have the capital to.
The family thanked the donor after getting the bag of rice and prayed to God to grant them blessings and support during their difficult time. The family was delighted to receive a bag of rice. The family smiled and offered a prayer for us and the donor as we left.
