Bag of Rice Project #569 -A visit to the Akunna family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Akunna family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M” , and this is the 569th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Akan family on the outskirts of Uyo; a friend recommended the family to us, and when we got to the compound we saw children playing outside the compound, so we told them to get us their parents. The mother stepped out with the children. She gave us a receptive welcome and offered us a seat. We declined politely, and she asked us our purpose for visiting; she even asked if we were coming to campaign that it is not 2026 yet. We told her our purpose for visiting, and she shouted. Her shout drew her mother’s attention, and she asked what happened. When she was told that someone donated a bag of rice to them, the mother started praying and said in their local dialect, ABASI ASI KOP AKAM UWENE- meaning God hears the prayers of the poor. They were excited and prayed for the donor. Mrs Akuna is blessed with three kids, and they live in a one-room apartment, which the mother rents; she is unable to afford a house for her children. The house lacks basic amenities; they have not had light in the past 10 years, though other people in the area do. This is because they do not have the funds to pay the electricity bill.

Mrs Akunna cooks with firewood. She is unable to afford cooking gas because of how expensive it is to get at the moment; also, filling the cooking gas is very expensive, and they do not have the money to afford that for now. Mrs. Akan has been unemployed; since her husband died, she has been the one taking care of the family, and she told us she has an interest in learning hairdressing so she could take care of the family, but she does not have the money to learn it.

The family was delighted. The Akunna family expressed gratitude to the benefactor for making their day better. They prayed that God would guide the donor to greatness, protect them, and show them love and grace every single day of their existence. The family was smiling and happy as we left.
