One of the ways I keep myself motivated on this coupon clipping journey is to keep track of my savings.  It helps me see where my money is going and what a huge impact couponing can really make!

Last year total spent was $1253.85

If I did not use coupons or sales these products would have cost me $9847.25

That means coupons saved me $8593.40

January -Spent $119.37 saved $666.32

February -spent $96.18 saved $649.57

March- spent $90.12 saved $1465.60

April – Took month off after having the baby

May- spent $92.89 saved  $591.35

June-spent  $148.89 saved $1690.52

July – spent  136.80 saved $426.90

August- Took the month off family vacations a school started

September - spent $190.64 saved $1730.48

October- spent $116.25 saved $1175.89

November- spent$ 133.48 saved $888.44

December- spent $129.23 saved $562.18

I try very hard to list everything that was purchased, but yes there are always items that just do not get listed.  Weather it be that Matt stopped by and grabbed things for a road trip, or because he felt like shopping.  Or because real life happens and I do not have time to grab a photo of the milk before I feed it to my hungry kids.  I do try hard and list almost all coupon trips  which is about 98% of the shopping I do for the year.

Thanks for responding!! It helps me figure out what’s “realistic” for my budget; sometimes I get caught up in comparing and feeling like I’m “failing” because I’m not doing what you’re able to do with your family of five BUT knowing the differences between our family’s meal preferences helps. Thank you, again!

I’ve been following your blog for almost two years, I think. In those two years, you’ve blogged about purchasing meat a handful of times. My family of three would never survive on the amount of meat you purchase for your family of six, and this is even with reducing the meat in our meals by about half. The only way I see this working is that you eat meatless meals often OR you eat out regularly??? (this doesn’t really seem to go with the idea of “thriftiness” though, so I don’t think that’s it). Do you eat a lot of meatless meals?

Yes Amy we do not eat much meat…. We do eat it at least 4 times a week but our protions are much smaller than many people. I do buy meat every month…. normally Bagged chicken is the common purchase. Or last year I bought enough Pork roast to fill my freezer… it lasted us a year. I bought it at Winco if you check back on the post you will see it …it is just no the main thing we buy. We only eat out about 2 times a month…. give or take

Does this include meat purchases also?

I have been following your tips and ideas since Nov 2010. And I will say you are the best! I had never understood power of coupons until now. I am 25 and just got married to my best friend. We have started from scratch due to family disagreements regarding our marriage and so we had to think about tiniest expenses. I gave up desiring on thinks that I thought weren’t essential for survival. But You made it possible for me to spend less and get more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

A question for you do you have a budget for coupon/stock pile and then one for weekly needs, like milk, eggs, fresh fruit, meat and such thing you can not always stock up on. I wondering how much is spent each month with both? I am trying to make meals from stock each day, but I always need something, I do shop weekly, for weekly needs, for planned meals and such, and also my stock trip with coupons. A family of four and another on the way, I try to stay under $480, with that being stock and weekly needs. Is your monthly amount listed above total for the month with everything?

This is everything we spend… but bountiful basket is not added in. Need to start doing that I guess, and this does not include if we eat out.

that is awesome!!!
Where and how do you keep track of your budget? do you have a program that you use. I’d like to keep track this year too!!!

A Thrifty Mom January 7, 2011 at 2:32 pm

I just keep track by adding up my receipts each week, and list them on my site. I know there are better ways but this is the way I have always done it

Does this include your weekly bountiful basket purchases?

I just wanted to say thank you for working so hard on this website. It must be quite an effort to be continuously blogging your purchases…I just started couponing (inspired by you) and that process alone with just my daughter to care for is enough to exhaust me. I can’t imagine keeping it up for so long with four! Anyway, my resolution for this new year was to be diligent about couponing and work my family out of debt, so I wanted to say thank you for giving back all that you do. As I am brand new at this, my budget review does not look as stunning as yours, but I have confidence that over time, it will. A thousand times, THANK YOU!
