Getting your family to eat things they don’t like

As a mom of 4 little ones I hear the phrase “I don’t like that” almost everyday.  Often it is because one of their friends said they don’t like it, or they don’t like the way it smells or some other crazy reason.  So at our house you always have to take two bites of everything on your plate.  If you don’t like it after that you do not have to eat more, but you always have to take 2 bites.  Often the kids will find they actually like things, that at first glace they were opposed to.

Another way to get my kids to eat new things is to get them involved in the cooking process.  When they help make it, they are excited to try it.  They understand more about the food, what they are called, where they come from and what they taste like.  All of my kids had made up their mind that they did NOT like mango’s.  They did not like the texture of them.  We get them often on our Bountiful Basket and I did not want them to go to waste.  So I have the kids help me make smoothies with them.  Mango’s, yogurt, ice and what ever other fruit we have (apricots, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, bananas).  Guess what the kids now LOVE mango smoothies 🙂

What we don’t drink for breakfast, we add to a Popsicle mold and freeze for a tasty snack later.

Each day they are a little different, but the kids love to help me make them.  It is a great way to get fresh fruits into my kids diets.

What are some tips you have for teaching your children to try food they don’t like?
