we get the majority of our decorations for Halloween at the Dollar store (.99 only) we also picked up 15 glow bracelets for just $1……. we’ll give those out instead of candy. This way we are adding to the safetyof the trick or treaters (we’ll also know if anyone comes by 2X)…… the kids really like it. And at about .06 each its a thrifty “treat”.

Eachyear after Halloween we go to the stores and buy are costumes early because they are on sale and you get a great deal!

My thrifty halloween tip, is to take another store that has their halloween costumes on sale, like (target, shopko, etc) week’s ad and price match at wal-mart, more than likely the costume, is cheaper and makes for almost “an after holiday” sale price, I did this today and got my son’s costume for 3.50 by using the shopko ad at 50% all halloween stuff :) !!! Around Halloween it hits me that Thanksgiving & Christmas are not too far away. I have a niece & nephew who are 3 & 4 years old, who love to play dress up and pretend. I also want to get a nice gift without the hefty paycheck…so last year on November 1st I made my rounds to Target, Dollar General, & Walmart and was able to get AWESOME costumes about 50%-75% half off. Plus when it got closer to christmas I found a nice large rubbermaid tub on sale for $2.00!!! It held all the costumes plus matched their bedroom colors. They kids loved the gifts & I loved the price tag!

Ok, I have NEVER been a big fan of Halloween. Guess I am in the minority. But, when family was young we had a party at our house. We invited family friends. Everyone dressed up. We live on a small acreage, so the dad’s hid candy all over outside (of course, weather must cooperate). Each child got a flash light (for keeps ~ way cool) and they looked for the candy in the dark (kind of like an easter egg hunt ~ only at night). Kids loved it. They still talk about the fun it was. (Kids are now 25 & 22!!) Families would all pitch in on the candy, so it wasnt’ a burden for anyone. I did a punch of some sort and maybe some chips or cheese and crackers. That was it. Simple, fun and great memories.

So, this is probably a little bit different from what your prior posts relate to, but this is my family’s way of saving money during the Halloween holiday. Each year we host a chili potluck block party. Our neighbors get together and everyone brings a side dish or chili fixins to share and I make a huge pot of chili. Also each family buys a large bag of candy to dump in one bucket for the trick or treaters to grab from. We sit our in our front driveway around a cozy warm firepit and enjoy the yummy chili with all of our fabulous neighbors and interact with all of the cute trick or treaters and parents. It really saves everyone a lot of money by sharing and we also have a lot of fun doing it! Happy Halloween Everyone!!

Last year I made my son’s Harry Potter costume out of a graduation robe from the thrift store (2.00) and a red and yellow scarf from Target’s dollar spot (1.00) and a pair of round glasses I popped the lenses out of at the Dollar Tree (1.00) I made his house patch out of cardboard and a print out of the Griffindor logo and pinned it to his robe (might want to use the robe again some year???) He found a nice stick outside for his wand and I drew a scar on his forehead with my eyeliner. It turned out great and everyone knew what he was for $4! I re-use my outside decor every year and keep all costumes in the tubs to be used later for another child. We had a new baby and I bought 10 pieces of felt and cut it in triangles and hot glued it to a brown sweatshirt and she’ll be an owl this year. That cost about $2.00 for the sweatshirt and about $2.00 for all of the felt and I have some left over!

Halloween Candle Decoration

Take a tall glass vase or Mason Jar
Fill bottom about 1/3 or so up w/candy corn
Push down in middle a votive holder w/one of those battery operated votive candles
All you can see is candy corn w/a light inside of it!

Or take a pretty glass vase/container and fill with those mini pumpkins or gourds!

Plastic holiday tubs. I keep one in the garage for Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc. I limit all decorations to what fits in the tub. That way I save things from year to year and avoid overbuying because it won’t fit in the tub. And of course only buy things after the season is over and things are 75-90% off. Then tuck it away in the tub to enjoy next year.

Laura October 6, 2010 at 6:25 pm

My best Halloween and ‘holiday’ tip in general is to save the stuff to use the next year. I have a Halloween plastic tub, Easter tub, Christmas tubs, and general holiday tubs in my garage. I try to limit decorations for each holiday to one rubbermaid tub each. That ensures I only keep what I really like and avoid overbuying in the first place because it won’t fit in the tub. But by saving the posters and decorations from year to year, there is so much less waste and you are building great family traditions. And of course always buy decorations or costumes after the event when stores are clearing them out for 75-90% off.

I have always loved dressing up for Halloween. My grandma would always make sew my costume out of what nots she would have or my parents would help me come up with something. One year I was even a toilet. So I have enjoyed making my girls cosumes over the years. I do some sewing for people throughout the year to earn extra money. So at Halloween time I will usually take in a costume or 2 and use the earnings for my girls costume supplies. Plus who enters the fabric store without coupons, certainly not I. Last year I made Elvis for a family they pay for materials then I charged a small amount for my time. I took the money a bought the fabric and of course my craft room overflows from the kindness of others. I make sure that most of their costume can be used as PJ and they will stay warm. Except the babies last year and it was shear fun. Anyway one of them won a WII and the baby won a gift cert. making it a total money maker, of course that is not what I set out to do. I am reusing a couple from years past this year also. I love saving. I guess I will email pictures seperately.

Halloween…a favorite time of year around our house. Last year I bought costumes right after the holiday. I was able to snag up 6 costumes for $21. I kept 4 back for the next halloween and the two extra I use for a rainy/snowy day surprise! We re-use homemade candy bags that were made from cheap material that was also purchased after the holiday. I have bought old sheets from garage sales (purchased for .10-.50) that are used for extra large spiders, goblins or ghosts for yard decorations.

every year my children (there are 4 of them) invite 20 each of their closest friends and we end up having 40-60 kids for a halloween party….a budget is a must!!! I have the little girls make pumpkins, faces, witches out of construction paper that i purchase on clearance after BTS. I buy hotdogs on coupon, and make homemade bread dough for mummy dogs. I buy brownies for free/coupon and make trays of them with different candies. Any other decorations come from dollar store. Big decorations and reusable things get purchased year before after halloween clearance. The kids have an amazing time with pumpkin bowling, costume contests and dance offs! Last year with 67 kids I spent about 150 dollars and they all took home giant gift bags, and I splurged on tiny sodas because they were cute:)

We do the clearance costumes from Target at the end of the season for the next year. I’ve gotten great ones for between $2-$10. One year we even gave them to our girls for Christmas as dress-up dresses. They loved them and play with them all the time. The Elizabeth Swan Pirates costume has been their favorite “Mulan” Costume. This way they have fun dress up throughout the year and a ton of choices come Halloween. I don’t like the idea of my kids thinking we need a brand new costume just for Halloween every year. We can get creative and make costumes too if their is something they want to be but we don’t have quite the right thing. We also pass down costumes and use them for the younger kids. We trade with my sister so that their is more to choose from and it can be something new and exciting. (She buys more actual costumes than we do and her kids are now all bigger than mine–even her youngest that is younger than my oldest. But she is happy to let us borrow her past costumes.) We of course use coupons and find deals on the candy for trick or treaters–we used to just go to Winco cause they have good deals on candy around halloween and thats another good option. We like pumpkin patchs, but they can be expensive so we will buy a couple pumpkins from wal-mart (I found two really big ones their this year for $2.98 each) then on Halloween or the day before I’ll take the girls to the pumpkin patch (they usually mark the pumpkins to 50% off or less by then.) That way they still get the experience without the huge inflated cost. We have a tradition of watching a movie and eating a pomagranite together after trick or treating (it’s usually cold here and we don’t want to stay out in it to long.) My girls look forward to this as much as trick or treating. We usually get a fun kid halloween movie from the library or use one from home. There are all kinds of fun free crafts online. A lot of them involve recycling (milk jug skeleton etc.) I always like to look/google and just see what might be fun for the current year for what we have on hand. Our library does a special costume story time, they get to hear Halloween stories, dress up and trick or treat all around the library. My mom does a special Halloween family dinner (not on Halloween but sometime the week of). It is so fun to see the different scary creations everyone comes up with. It doesn’t have to cost money to have a great time. It’s the traditions, fun, and family they will remember not how much you spent on their costume. I have to add one year I made a “Bell-beauty and the beast dress” for my daughter for Halloween and my neighbor lent us the snow white one she made for my baby. We went to the mall and got photos made for under $10. It was so worth it, they are some of my kids favorite photos. If you do go through the trouble one year to do something special for their costumes it’s worth taking the time to get great photos so they can remember.

I dislike Halloween because of all the gore, death and the dark-side it seem to represents. I have children that love Halloween, so I am trying to find the middle-of-the-road where we can all enjoy Halloween. Money is tight so doing it on a budget will be the only way we can survive this holiday. I’m trying to plan ahead and look for wonderful budget ideas. Thanks!

My little 6 year old wants to decorate for Halloween this year. I am freaking out because I dont want to spend a lot of money…so I will be checking your lovely blog for ideas! Cute video!

I have always tried to do Halloween inexpensively. Costumes can cost a ton of money. I go to Savers for items, I shop after Halloween for accessories and decorations. Last year I was able to get about $130 dollars of deco for around $12 at Walgreens with clearance and an RR I had. One year the girls went as Disney princesses and I wore a bridesmaid dress I had and went as a princess with them. I shop all the sales and get candy for next to nothing and shop yard sales all year and put things away until Halloween. There are just too many ways to save and still have a fantastic Halloween. You don’t have to spend a forutne to have fun, ever!!
