. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Idam family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Karen Hicks, Linda Honsvick, Susan Pritchard and Dawn Mahon this is the 251st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Idams in Ibii, a village located on the outskirts of Afikpo in eastern Nigeria. Mrs Orie Idam Nkama is a petty trader, she sells food items at a local market. She has been in the business for 7 years, with hard work and many struggles, she was able to save about $150 within 5 years, which she used to rehabilitate her husband’s mud house with some mixture of cement and sharp sand.
She rents it out to corps members and newly posted teachers who teach in their lone secondary school, some few meters away from their home. She makes $120 a year from the rents and manages that amount with her family of 6.

I share this with you to help put into perspective why a $109 bag of rice given as a gift is such a powerful gift, a blessing no one expects to receive. It will both nourish them but also allow them to get ahead as they can save for other much needed items.

She cooks with firewood, she also has the knowledge how to use kerosene stove or Gas but believes the use of firewood is more economical and available. Their entire village can only access kerosene or cooking gas in a town very far away from the village where they reside.

She was very happy when we presented a bag of rice to her family, this to her is the biggest gift she has ever received from people she has never met. She was full of gratitude and rained prayers on the donors.
