. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Friday family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to From Devin, Nichole, Brody, Zane and Presley with the message Be Strong and Carry On, this is the 209th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Friday family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were recommended to us by their village chief. The Fridays and their 2 kids live in a one bedroom mud house with no electricity or plumbing and to fetch water from a local stream or collect rain water.

The Fridays cook with firewood in one of the rooms in their home. They use firewood because it is the cheapest that they can afford. Mr Friday rides a bike for commercial purposes and gets paid as he carries people to their destination. He does not own this motorbike and he does the same deal that most young people in this village do. Somebody buys a motorbike but does not want to go through the stress of riding it and he finds someone like Mr Friday and gives him the motorbike on the condition that he remunerates or pays rent of around $13 dollars everyday for the use of the bike. Then keeps any extra money he makes. And for a whole days hardwork, he barely makes that amount and if the motorbike breaks down the costs is usually on him. So some days he works all day and makes nothing or even looses money. It is not a good way to provide for your family, but a job and jobs are very hard to find in our current state. They only do this because on the weekends they don’t have to remit any money and can keep the whole days earnings. He was out working when we visited. His wife Mrs Friday is a trader and sells fruits at their local market but has since stayed at home to take care of their kids.

The Fridays were very happy to meet us. They were grateful for their bag of Rice and thanked those who donated this bag of Rice to them. They appreciated it so much and Mrs Friday was very happy with the gift and could not believe their luck of such a gift. Most families have been hit hard by the economic lockdown and subsequent recession and this gift will be even more important to these families in the coming months.
