Bag of Rice Project #21 -A visit to the Oma Inya family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Oma Inya, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jennifer Capell this is the 21th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met Mrs. Oma Inya in a remote village in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Confined in her husband’s home whose death occurred a long time ago shortly after the Nigerian-Biafra civil war. She entered into yam cultivation and sells same for survival. She lost the breadwinner of the family twenty-six years after the death of her husband and also lost her sight ten years later.

These extreme conditions has thrown her and her two surviving unmarried daughters into untold hardship over the past few years. She was excited when she received a bag of rice from donors, especially in such a time she least expected it. She was happy and grateful for the rice and after we left she called us and asked if she can share the rice to others so they can benefit from that and of course we said yes and we will plan to go back there on our subsequent visits.
